Today we’d like to introduce you to Joseph Capalbo.
Joseph, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
From the time I started playing guitar at age 11, I became fascinated with learning everything I could about music — and the more I learned, the more passionate I became about helping others.
I got accepted to Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts, where I was fortunate to hone my craft under renowned instructors such as Tomo Fujita, who taught John Mayer. After graduating with a degree in songwriting, I was signed by a publishing company for an electronic dance single called “Ignited.” The track was featured on a European radio station’s compilation CD, placing my name next to artists like Avicii, Nicky Romero, Disclosure, and Tiesto. That release was my first stepping stone into the music industry.
But as my original music started to get radio airplay and hit the charts, I realized that pursuing a music career as an artist wasn’t the right path for me. I was much more interested in writing and producing music and started working with publishers that specialize in curating custom music for movies, television, commercials, video games, and other forms of visual media.
The first time one of my tracks landed on TV was with the reality show Kourtney and Khloe Take the Hamptons, and I felt like I had found a niche that worked well for the music I was creating. Since then, my original tracks have been placed with ABC, CBS, Comedy Central, NBC, MTV, E!, Hallmark, Oxygen, Lifetime, Sony, Netflix (Orange Is the New Black), Nickelodeon, ESPN, Fox, The Cooking Channel, NHL Channel, and more. I had a fun opportunity to write and produce the theme song for E!’s docu-series Roadtrip Reunion (if you know the Jersey Shore, then you might have seen that one), and I also provided the music for the global brand JBL in a new promo commercial.
I’ve put in a lot of hard work to get to where I am today, and I have more exciting projects coming up soon. I love inspiring other songwriters and producers to reach their goals, so feel free to connect with me on www.JosephCapalboMusic.com and follow my music career journey there.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Getting into music was very natural for me because I thoroughly enjoyed the process of learning the guitar, understanding the emotional effect of the songwriting and production choices, and helping other people with my music.
I think there are always ups and downs for any creative pursuing their passion as a career, but developing the right perspective has significantly helped me in my own journey. Every “no” that I’ve received has provided the opportunity to see room for growth and take action to improve. I’m grateful for all of my failures because they’ve pushed me into more success than I had ever imagined.
Can you give our readers some background on your music?
I specialize in writing and producing custom music for record labels, music publishers, films (featured and indie), TV shows, commercials, and any type of visual media that lies in between. I typically have consistent work because I make my clients’ needs a priority, and I work well with fast turnaround times.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
The support from family and friends has undeniably helped make the road a bit smoother. The education and connections from Berklee College of Music made a lot of the things possible to get to where I am today.
