Meet Josefina Fernandez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Josefina Fernandez.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I was born in Buenos Aires and I’ve been sketching ever since I can remember. I went to school for Fashion Design and upon moving to the States in 2014, I started my fashion illustration business. I opened my Etsy shop that October and it has been an awesome and wild ride ever since. My studio is located in Little River.
My work is inspired by the most diverse things, like cities, phrases, songs and colors. I love sketching mermaids and unicorn girls. I am a self-taught artist.

Please tell us about your art.
My body of work is in illustration. I mostly create female characters that are either super fashionable or rather magical (mermaids, unicorns and mermicorns). Sometimes both. I create these characters because I feel the need to. For some reason it makes me really happy to bring them into existence.

My media of choice are watercolors and gouache. Sometimes I change it up and use artist markers instead, or even collage and mixed media. The other day I read this quote and it really hit home: “the job of an artist is to offer a sanctuary of beauty to an ugly world”. That’s why we binge watch series or forget about our own reality when we watch a movie or read a good book. I like to believe that I can possibly brighten somebody’s day with my illustrations. It’s really humbling and rewarding when one of my followers tells me that they are inspired by my art or that my work makes them smile. I strive every day to get better and better at what I do.

Do you have any advice for other artists? Any lessons you wished you learned earlier?
Just to keep creating. Practice always makes perfect 🙂

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
People can keep up with my illustrations all over social media. My Instagram handle is @jf. illustrations (that’s my main social media outlet, where I post daily updates). I’m also on Twitter, Facebook and Pinterest. I have a blog as well. (www.jfillustrations.net/blog). They can support my work through my easy shop (etsy.com/shop/josefinafernandez)
