Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Domoney.
Jessica, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My passion for Beauty blossomed when I was 15 and I got my first job assisting in a hair salon. I moved to New York City to go to college at The Fashion Institute of Technology where I studied Design, Advertising & Marketing. Through college, I had random bartending jobs but I freelanced and trained as a makeup artist for cosmetic companies, worked NYFW and did hair and makeup for weddings.
When I was 26 I packed my bags, moved to Fort Myers, Florida and enrolled in cosmetology school. When I got my first job in a salon I was the only one who did makeup and so I always got booked weddings but the updos terrified me! YouTube quickly became my best friend and I began teaching myself basic upstyles.
In 2013 I left the salon I was at to pursue an independent career and grow my bridal business. I still work behind the chair three days a week but in 2014 I formed Glambox Artistry. I now have six girls on my team so we can accommodate larger bridal parties.
In 2015 I became an artist and educator with Sexy Hair and began teaching and traveling all over the country!
In 2018 I was invited to join the Modern Salon Artist Connective Team and have become an ambassador for quite a few Beauty brands. I currently work three days at Epic Salon in Fort Myers where I have my own studio. My team and I travel and service 30-40 weddings a year.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I have been extremely fortunate to have gotten a college education before I started my business. That still doesn’t prepare you for the unexpected but it did give me a good foundation to build on.
Because I own a mobile business my biggest challenge is the physical strain lugging your kit all over the place to provide services on location. However, on the flip side, I have gotten to travel all over the country and work in some of the most beautiful venues!
One of the challenges I currently face is realistic expectations and boundaries with brides. In the bridal industry, we are not the typical 9 to 5 Monday through Friday business and I get calls 24/7.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
In Real life, I am known for coloring and extensions as well but in this online world we live in I’m known for my bridal upstyling and makeup.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I grew up in the 80’s… do you remember crimpers? Not texture irons like we use now but crimping irons… My favorite childhood memory was at about seven I permed all of my Barbie dolls hair buy wetting it and crimping it…
I will never forget the sound, more importantly, smell of burning plastic!
