Today we’d like to introduce you to Devonne Covington.
Hi Devonne, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I remember during my college years at Alabama State University while studying education, I set this goal. After obtaining my Bachelor’s and working on Master’s, I began my career as a teacher in Alabama. Eventually, I went on and worked in Louisiana and Florida’s public school systems, as well. After 15 years of teaching, I decided to resign and start a Private Transportation Service named Step by Step Transportation Services in which I currently own 9 vans that services school age children in Miramar, Pembroke Pines, and City of Miami.
After 3 previous failed attempts to open a child care center, during the pandemic, on January 4, 2021, Step by Step Educational Center opened its doors in the City of Miami. Step by Step Educational Center has grown at an exceptional pace servicing scholars ages 6 weeks to 4 years old.
After our first school year, Step by Step Preparatory School was birthed. Step by Step Preparatory School is a private school that currently provides education to grades Kindergarten through Fifth Grade. Once our Voluntary Pre Kindergarteners graduate they transition over to the preparatory school located at 1211 NW 54 Street in Miami.
The Step by Step Empire is becoming household name is the communities it serves.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Some challenges in the beginning of opening the preschool was finding dependable, reliable staff. A lot of them didn’t see my vision and they were terminated the moment I realized it. I’m not scared to terminate people that’s not on the same page.
