Daily Inspiration: Meet Nickii Kane

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nickii Kane.

Hi Nickii, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
At age 13, I discovered photography after becoming disinterested in playing video games with my brother and our friends. Seeking a new adventure, I ended up exploring in my Mother’s closet and found a small pink digital Samsung pocket camera. I then needed to find a model to photograph so I made my brother stand in as my subject. He was always the “Mr. Pretty Boy” amongst our friends.

We look alike actually, almost like twins. It wasn’t long after developing my newfound love for photography that social media became the trend. Facebook, Instagram, and Tumblr became the preferred platforms for showcasing photos, ideas, and communicating amongst peers. I got involved and started posting the pictures of my brother. People responded positively, and I was pleasantly surprised.

My progression in wanting to learn everything I could about art naturally led me to pursue secondary education at Edna Manley College of the Visual & Performing Arts, located in Kingston Jamaica, where I earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Visual Communication. After a couple of years of studying graphic design, my simple childhood hobby presumed to make way for a professional career. I then applied my knowledge to other fields of interest. When you’re doing what you’re supposed to do, it seems to make a way for one to succeed. Since graduating college, I have established myself in Jamaica as a Creative Director for leading companies and trendsetters within industries ranging from; music, food & beverage, fashion, beauty, and travel.”

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been a life-changing journey. As a woman in this industry, I have to choose what is important and what I will fight for. Through my talents, I had to learn some hard lessons to help build me as a person and as a professional. I have had some fun experiences and I’m blessed to receive the things I have through my talents. Met very influential and successful people, touched lives with my photos, helped build brands to the top and that’s truly the best feeling, to know your talents are helping others positively.

I think women have it hard in almost any industry in Jamaica especially when it comes to being a creative. I’ve been in countless situations where I’ve had to fight for my voice or opinions be heard and that should not happen. However, I found the voice I was looking for and used it only when necessary and let my talents speak for itself.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a creative who loves to express through various artistic mediums. I specialize in fine art, photography, film, directing, creative direction, art direction and interior design. I’m known for most of these professions as I dabble in all when I’m needed. Being a creative and having so many talents within the creative field is a true blessing that I’m grateful for everyday. It brings a sense of joy when I can share my talents with the world and help others at the same time. I’m really proud of my achievements over the past 11 years being a professional creative for it has opened so many opportunities for me to build myself as a creative and also contribute to a wider industry and be impactful at the same time. I’m proud I decided to leave my hometown to fulfill my creative dreams and it has been flourishing and growing ever since.

My creative expressions are all intertwined and I love that. It allows me to mix different ideas and different principles to create beautiful and timeless work.

What’s next?
I dream to own a production company where I can cater to locals as well as international clients. I would love to own a studio to create work and also have so others can use and develop their craft. I would love to own a prop house as well for the set design industry in Jamaica needs some attention. I’m looking forward to growing my team and my company itself to be on a larger platform and impacting others positively at a larger scale.
