Daily Inspiration: Meet Myriam Del Angel

Today we’d like to introduce you to Myriam Del Angel.

Myriam Del Angel

Hi Myriam, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I was raised in Little Village, a predominantly Mexican neighborhood in Chicago, IL with parents from both Colombia and Mexico. I am the first in my family to graduate from college.

I graduated from Northeastern Illinois University with a degree in Human Resources Development. After graduating, I had the privilege of working for reputable companies such as Arthur Andersen, Microsoft, Accenture, Deloitte, E&Y, PwC, and Grant Thornton, all in HR roles. I am a divorced mom with three amazing teenagers, I am a foodie, love Salsa dancing, CorePower Yoga and I love to travel between Chicago and Miami.

During the pandemic, I had the opportunity to contribute as an author to the book “Latinas Rising in HR Volume 1.” This book proudly showcases inspiring stories of remarkable women who have made a difference in the field of HR across various industries. This experience has taught me the significance of storytelling.

With over 20 years of HR experience, I have seen and heard the positive, negative, and challenging aspects of diversity and equity, as well as the struggles faced by Latinas in the corporate world, both professionally and personally. Motivated by these experiences, I decided to write “Latinas in Corporate: Overcoming Cultural Obstacles While Juggling a Career and a Family.” Through this book, readers will gain insight into the state of Latinas in corporate America through data, the perspectives of three fictional characters, and compelling stories shared by real women whom I interviewed anonymously.

Additionally, the book provides valuable tools and resources to navigate their career journeys. I hope that Latinas will feel heard and realize that they are not alone in their corporate endeavors. We must support one another to make a meaningful impact. Be the kind of Latino who supports other Latinos.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Leaving home to attend college was a difficult experience for me because my parents didn’t fully grasp the importance of education at that time. I found myself completely independent, and throughout my college years, I tirelessly worked two or more jobs just to make ends meet. It took me eight years to achieve my undergraduate degree.

Furthermore, when I entered the corporate world, I quickly noticed the lack of diversity and representation. I didn’t encounter many individuals who shared my background or looked like me. Growing up, I hadn’t been exposed to many professions which made it even more difficult to adapt to the dynamics of these large organizations. I often felt like an outsider, questioning my sense of belonging. There were moments when I truly felt that I didn’t fit in.

Later in life, after my divorce, I experienced the weight of being on my own once again. This time, I was not only responsible for myself but also my three children. However, this responsibility became my driving force, pushing me to strive for success in my career and to assist other Latinas on their journeys. Through my books and speaking engagements, I aim to empower and support fellow Latinas, drawing from my own experiences to provide guidance and inspiration.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
With over 20 years of experience as a Human Resources professional, I find immense satisfaction in my role. I advise leadership on all aspects of human resources and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. What truly fulfills me is the ability to actively contribute towards creating a more fair and inclusive community and cultivating a diverse culture.

Additionally, being an author is another role that brings me joy. Through my writing, I can share my own experiences as well as the stories of others within the corporate world. This platform allows me to shed light on the challenges and triumphs that women and minorities encounter in their professional journeys. I believe that by sharing these narratives, I can make a meaningful impact and inspire others to navigate their careers with confidence and resilience.

Overall, these roles provide me with invaluable opportunities to effect change and advocate for the advancement specifically of women and minorities. I am passionate about creating a more inclusive and equitable corporate landscape, and I am grateful to be able to contribute to this cause through my work and writing.

We all have different ways of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
To me, success encompasses attaining inner peace and contentment with the choices I have made in both my personal and professional life. It entails maintaining good health, embarking on enriching travel experiences, being surrounded by loved ones, raising children who embody kindness and empathy, and continuously making progress towards achieving financial freedom.
