Daily Inspiration: Meet Erica Cooper

Today we’d like to introduce you to Erica Cooper.

ERICA COOPER

Hi Erica, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
I grew up on Bainbridge Island WA and enjoyed singing and dancing as a kid. I joined a couple of choirs and started private voice lessons when I was seven. I was always very passionate about music so when it came time to pick a college, Cornish College of the Arts was the only school I applied to. I had such a wonderful college experience and am so grateful I got the opportunity to go there. I started as a classical vocal major and then way through changed my major to jazz vocals.

While at Cornish, I was part of a Latin and blues ensemble. I took a songwriting class and completely fell in love with songwriting. After school, I spent all my time learning new chord progressions and writing poems. At this time, I was also introduced to recording software so I could start to bring what I heard in my head to life with recording. Since graduating, I have been recording music for my solo project. I first released a full-length album called Safety Escape, and now I have been releasing singles one at a time.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has been a challenging road. I was blessed with a supportive family who always encouraged me to go after my music dreams. My biggest obstacle has been health struggles. I was diagnosed with Lyme disease in my early 20s.

The symptoms and the treatment have taken a huge toll on me but I have a very positive outlook. I’m a huge advocate now of proper Lyme testing/diagnosis, the healing work of Dr. Joe Dispenza, and living a healthy lifestyle to manage the symptoms.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a songwriter and alternative synth-pop recording Artist. I love writing about the dynamics of relationships. I love ethereal vocals, choir vocals, big string soundscapes, and disco dance music production so I like to incorporate those elements in my music.

I am most proud of the music videos I made for my songs “Sugar Pills and “Honeymoon”. I was able to collaborate with dancers for those videos which was a huge highlight for me. Right now, I’m working on some new songs for my solo project but I am also very excited to collaborate with more artists in the future.

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
It seems like because of how accessible social media and production software is now more and more artists will be able to release music.

There are so many apps now for merch creation and Spotify has new ways to connect with fans. Artists feel like entrepreneurs these days, we need to be able to wear many different hats.
