Conversations with Tori Scott

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tori Scott.

Hi Tori, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I am a multidisciplinary artist based in Miami, Florida.

I created my first piece of artwork in 2015 and have continued developing my work since then. I received my BFA from Florida International University with a focus in Studio art and a Minor in Art History in 2020.

Since then, I’ve participated in a group exhibition at the Frost Art Museum and will be a part of another group show at the MOCA at the end of May.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
As an artist, even though I have been successful with much of my work, there are times when I lose confidence.

I can account for a few times when I experienced extreme creative block. This can be very discouraging and sometimes leads to me losing passion altogether. Somedays, I would just sit in my studio and reflect on my work until I felt a new spark of inspiration.

I have realized that art is much more than just a hobby, it’s a form of expression for me, and it’s greatly needed in my life.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My subject matter often revolves around the idea of black liberation and existence. These pieces represent a communal expression of shared experiences and cultural ties.

With most of my works, I start with taking photos of subjects and adding them to an archive that I later explore through different mediums such as painting, digital photography, and installations. I truly enjoy creating and being able to connect with others using my art.

I am most proud of pushing my art and being featured in several exhibitions so far; I would’ve never imagined being recognized in this way. I often say that my appreciation for art came later in life due to my lack of exposure.

One thing that sets me apart from other artists is how I construct narratives for each of my works; I like to compare it to storytelling.

What do you think about luck?
I always felt that luck wasn’t necessarily on my side; I never really was acknowledged regarding achievements or academics in school, so when I found my lane and began to succeed, it took time for me to embrace it.

It may not be luck, but more so driven passion that continues to advance my artistry and exposure.
