Today we’d like to introduce you to Tharah LaFrance.
Hi Tharah, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started singing in church choir and school choruses in elementary school. Started performing at open mics when I was 18. I was gifted a drum for my 29th birthday and things just kind of took off from there. I perform regularly around South Florida and have recently started traveling and performing. I’ve spent the last five years operating and organizing my own open mic in order to give myself and others a consistent platform to display gifts.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road has not been smooth. I am not the typical singer/songwriter, as far as my looks or outlook. My content is a little less mainstream. It’s difficult to infiltrate a market that seems to be looking for a certain type of female artist. Also, it’s been difficult to gain recognition and respect in my own city. I’ve been performing for nearly 20 years and still find it difficult to get paid gigs and simple Recognition for all that I’ve done.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a singer/songwriter. I play the djembe drum. I also host and organize a weekly open mic in South Florida. @theopenmichappyhour, which is my pride and joy. I think my years in the industry set me apart. I understand the perspective of an artist and a promoter/organizer.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
I have so many people to credit for my longevity @theopenmichappyhour. The list is very long. First and foremost, I have thank Rodny, my partner in business. He has constantly pushed for our success since we started. All my girlfriends who consistently share flyers, attend my events, pass out drinks, cook, and do whatever I need them to do: Danielle, Francia, Jane, Shayla. Dasha, Marsha, and Wes for being inspirational and pushing me to explore all my gifts and push myself beyond my comfort zone. Cool Peeple and OneWayFlight for pushing me to continue when I wanted to give up. Everyone who attends and shares and does anything pertaining to @theopenmichappyhour and @tharahsings. Lastly, @king_sphinx_420 who is my biggest cheerleader, confidant, business and life partner, personal photographer, chef, and more.
