Conversations with Keyla Belvin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Keyla Belvin.

Hi Keyla, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I have always had a passion for helping others. Whether it’s within the community or through an employment opportunity. I live my life transparently so that other people like me have someone to relate to. I looked and longed for it as a child and couldn’t wait to make some kind of difference in the world with my everyday story. Through my personal battles and seeing things within the healthcare industry and also the portrayals of life on social media, I wanted to bridge a gap of normalcy. Life is not perfect, it is not one dimensional. There are so many layers and I am still figuring them out. I started to record videos (Before sharing to YouTube) as a form of therapy. I shared a video with a friend and the rest is history. It only took one, and it only takes one. If my story, my life, my content, impacts one person positively, I’m doing something right. Anything additional is a bonus. I am in the position that I am in today by being authentically me and sharing the raw reality of my life. Is it perfect, absolutely not. But it’s mine!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
If I said yes, it would be the biggest lie ever. No, it hasn’t been easy. I have had a lot of self-discovery. With that causes pain and turmoil with your close relationships because there is so much change. Luckily I have the greatest support system in the world. Mental health, physical health, drive, ambition, relationships, and resources are all things that add(ed) character to the road I’m traveling. At every stage I honed in on the moment and accepted it for exactly that, a moment. I accept, process, adjust and make the next plan accordingly.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am both a professional in the Health Administration field and a content creator for YouTube. Professionally, I work to continue learning more and more to make changes in the healthcare resources provided to our communities. Personally, I share content of my life and my experiences to the world. I have been through things that were/are considered taboo in the black community and in healthcare. I am most proud of my authenticity and how it sets me apart from others. A lot of people tell me I can’t be in these two worlds simultaneously (healthcare and social media) with a solid foundation and reputation. My worlds connect for me, and though the two sides may be different, I learn and incorporate pieces from each into each other. The world is changing. You can have both, you can do both, and I believe that’s what sets me apart.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
My circle! The definition of family has changed for me over the years because it is not simply who I share a connected blood relationship with. It’s deeper than that, and it’s my choice of who is in that circle. Specifically, I want to shout out my parents and my two sisters because they are my biggest supporters. My parents, Ish and Tish, have given me the foundation to be a good and decent human being. A set of morals and values that have shaped me into who I am and a drive and determination that won’t allow me to settle for less. My sisters, Kira and Ishaun, are my ride or die! We are all so very different, but we fit together like the perfect puzzle and they have helped me through the challenges I have faced in my life. Lastly, I would like to thank my Husband, Kyante. He has been my rock through every step of my journey, and I have gained additional support through my new family since our journey started. He has supported and loved me in ways that I don’t even think he realizes, he is a huge piece of my reason why! My circle is tight-knit, and I love them dearly, Thank you!
