Meet Jose Cabrera of JC Through The Lens in Kendall

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jose Cabrera.

Jose, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started the company back in October of 2017, and I had an idea in mind where I was going to take food photography to another level. I’ve always been passionate about photography, and I became a chef ten years ago, so this made sense.

I could shoot food through the eye of a chef. I think that my passion clearly translates through my work and it’s what has made me successful.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The beginning was rough. I had to leave a steady job in order to focus 100% on my business. This meant no guaranteed income and the bills can’t be put on pause.

Fortunately, through perseverance, I got noticed quite quickly, and from there it took off. Every day is still a learning experience, and all the bumps in the road teach me something. Struggles are important, I think they’re the best source of self-knowledge.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the JC Through The Lens story. Tell us more about the business.
My company is known for providing mainly the restaurant industry with “food porn” content. I take food and with my knowledge of food and passion for art and create images that hopefully entice the viewer and make them hungry. I specialize in food content and believe that my experiences as a chef are what set my work apart.

I’m most proud of the consistency I am able to put out. As a chef at a restaurant, it’s important to maintain consistency. I treat my photos as if they were dishes going out to Michelin guide inspectors. Every photo is a representation of me.

Is there a specific memory from when you were younger that you really miss?
My favorite childhood memories are growing up at a race track. I grew up in a family heavily involved in motorsports.

Not too long ago, a complete stranger, at a Karting track told me to put together a website, t-shirts and business cards.

I got home that day at 3 pm, by 10 pm that night, most of the structure, logo, t-shirts, web site and business cards had already been sent to print.
