Meet James Devalon of The Process Performance and Recovery in Deerfield Beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to James Devalon.

James, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
We all have unique sets of circumstances in our lives that we can use as excuses.   But instead we need to see those as opportunities to learn, be inspired, and start implementing necessary changes  make our dreams come true. During my time as a firefighter/paramedic in a predominately elderly community, I would constantly see and hear stories of people who never took the risk to do what they love, never followed their hearts, or took steps to truly make the difference they dreamed about.

I loved being a fireman, saving lives, helping others, being active, being part of a team, and learning every day. However, I knew there was more out there for me and envisioned making a bigger impact in my community through health and wellness. So in order to combine my passion for serving the community and health and wellness, a simple solution seemed to switch my career path to physical fitness.

What has that journey looked like?
Challenging! But I always expected it as such. I knew pursuing this dream would be touch and worth it. The first obstacle was leaving the fire department after 12 years. It is very rare to see someone leave the fire department after 12 years, especially a supervisor position, to start a new career. In my time with the fire department I was promoted to several different ranks and was involved in several committees, so to hear that I was leaving to pursue a career in fitness was a big shock to the organization. The pressure and shock factor sometimes made me wonder if this was the right decision. I left behind security to chase after a vision, a goal, a dream. Very few people understood why I was leaving what looked to be a very promising career with the fire department.

However, my drive and desire was relentless. I determined I would help  others who wanted to help themselves, who truly wanted to make a positive difference in their lives and wanted direction.

The next big obstacle I had to overcome was being a business owner in a new area without a following. After leaving the fire department I found an amazing location to start my vision of opening a gym, however, it was in a city that I had no presence, no following and very little knowledge of. Thanks to years of mental training and personal growth as a firefighter, I was able to improvise, adapt and overcome a brand new role in a new area. I quickly joined several local committees and made friends with my neighbors to leverage relationships and show the community why they should know, like, and trust me. After three months I was able to build a strong following of 30 members. The response continues to be positive and I thank God for my resiliency and success thus far.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into The Process Performance and Recovery story. Tell us more about the business.

Do you feel like there are certain traits that increase the likelihood of success?
Yes the key to success is the culture I create. Every person wants to be part of a bigger purpose, that will really require their best version of themselves, where they will thrive, not just survive. A culture that helps people enjoy simple things like aging well, staying active, and  being involved in the community. I know having my community know, like and trust me is one of the ways that we will all be successful. I need to lead by example and consistently following through with promises. Lastly, creating a fun environment where people feel at peace and get results all feeds into the culture and an overall successful experience for everyone.
