Meet Alberto Dana of Dana Athletics in Coconut Grove

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alberto Dana.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Alberto. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My journey into the health and fitness industry began while I was in college at FIU. At the time, I was going to school full time and I had a full-time job. I was dealing with a lot of stressed out and overwhelmed. It was very challenging to maintain a work/life balance and for the first time in my life I felt like quitting. In the process I managed to pick up many unhealthy habits like smoking cigarettes, alcohol consumption, poor diet, too much coffee and not enough water, and very little sleep. After a couple of years, my health was in the worse shape it had ever been. This lifestyle was not sustainable for me, so I decided that I needed to make a change. I began to exercise at my school’s gym, and I remember watching the trainers having a great time with their clients. I thought to myself “wow, how awesome to be able to make a living by helping others get into shape?” So, I gave it a shot.  I became a certified personal trainer and began my career in fitness with one of the largest fitness corporations in the U.S.

During this time the fitness business was taking off.  More and more people were seeking out guidance from health professionals.  It was a great way to make a living and thanks to the flexibility I had, I was able to make it through school, graduate with a degree in hospitality, and quit smoking cigarettes!  After almost 10 years of hard work and training in a corporate setting, it was time to branch out. In February of 2016 I started my own personal training business, DANA ATHLETICS.

Has it been a smooth road?
If the journey was always smooth, I wouldn’t have grown and developed into the person I am today. One of the biggest challenges I faced in the corporate world was when I decided to take on a new role and move from my home club to a new location. I had to let go of my clients and start over in a new gym. It was a tough decision, but I knew that it was a growth opportunity for me, so I embraced it. In my new role as a fitness manager, I led a team of twenty trainers in a small gym that was struggling in performance. With the help of my leadership team, I was able to turn the gym around in just a few months and within a year it became one of the top fitness clubs in the entire east coast district. This was not an easy task, but in the end, I was very proud of the outcome. I’m very grateful for the experience I had because now, as a business owner, I understand the importance of taking risks and developing a culture of excellence.

So, let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Dana Athletics story. Tell us more about the business.
DANA ATHLETICS is not just a personal training company. Our mission is to change lives and empower people to live a healthy/active lifestyle. My personal goal is to help and guide others to find balance and purpose in this fast-paced world filled with so many distractions. We strive to make an impact in our community by getting involved in local projects and sharing the gift of health. Our teachings incorporate yoga and mindfulness techniques to help calm the mind, and nutritional guidance to help build a durable body. We provide individualized strength training and conditioning programs that enhance performance, along with corrective exercise strategies that help correct muscular imbalances, improve posture, and prevent injuries. In more recent years, I have also incorporated unconventional training methods (kettlebells, steel mace, steel club, suspension, battle rope) designed to improve human movement and functionality for people of all ages. Whether my clients are looking to lose a few pounds, train for a competition, or just simply want to add some new skills to their practice, we have something to offer for everyone. We provide private and group training sessions in our wonderful OM Movement Studio located in the heart of Coconut Grove.

Tell us about your favorite and least favorites things about our city.
I am a Miami native with Mexican roots and living in Miami has been awesome for me. My favorite thing about Miami are the beautiful beaches and the awesome weather we have all year round. It makes it easy to hang out at the beach with family and friends on any given day of the week. My least favorite thing about Miami is the traffic (and sometimes crazy drivers) during rush hour. Regardless, I love my city.
