Today we’d like to introduce you to MJ Acosta.
MJ, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My family to Miami from New York City (Washington Heights) just as I was starting High School. I attended Sunset HS in Kendall. In college, I was a University of Miami Hurricanette Dancer from 2002-2005. I graduated with my Bachelor’s in Broadcasting from Barry University.
I was able to start my career in journalism in Miami as a bilingual sport and news reporter. I worked on-air in South Florida for seven years before taking the lead Sports Anchor role at NBC and Telemundo in San Diego where I produced, wrote, edited and anchored daily sportscasts in English and Spanish and won Emmy Awards as part of the Telemundo news team.
In September of 2018, I started working at the NFL Network as their Bay Area-based reporter. However, throughout the season I’ve covered several teams including the Miami Dolphins. I was able to reunite with my former NFL Cheerleader sisters. I cheered for the Miami Dolphins from 2012-2013.
I am the first ever Latina on-air talent for the NFL Network, and I provide content for NFL Mexico and NFL Espanol.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I’ve encountered a myriad of obstacles and struggles over the last decade in the broadcast industry. Most notably was a horrific encounter with a former boss who sexually harassed and assaulted me. I spoke of this for the first time in 2017 (nearly a decade after it happened) with a group of college students. The #MeToo movement has made such a profound impact, and it’s so important to be part of not only the conversation but to make strides towards true change and empowerment.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with NFL Network – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I am the first ever Latina on-air reporter for the NFL Network. I’m based in the Bay Area, but I cover teams from across the league.
I’m proud of the push the Network is making to make sure a diverse audience feels represented. Our initiatives with NFL International including NFL Mexico and Spanish language content across all platforms continue to grow at a high rate.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
This is my first season with the NFL Network, so I plan to continue to earn and grow my role as a bilingual reporter and host. My ultimate goal is to eventually host my own sports/entertainment talk show at the national network level.
