Today we’d like to introduce you to Priscilla Fernandez.
Priscilla, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Back in 2011, a friend of mine had a high number of cancer cells following a surgery.
After weeks of sobbing, she realized she needed to do some research, why, how, is it more the just genetics? She discovered through numerous articles, studies, books, and documentaries that one of the main reasons why the human body becomes diseased is, acidity. Toxicity through was we are consuming and the way we live. She dedicated three months to an organic, plant-based, Whole Foods diet along with a cleaner, simpler way of living. After this time her doctor’s visits were unnecessary, her cancer cell count had completely gone down.
With this inspiration, I followed the same path, my own but quite similar. We are all trying to heal but it starts from within, and there is a lot of work to be done. In 2014, I wanted to bring this idea to my community. I knew it wasn’t just about me, but about all of us, the more educated we all become, the higher chance of longevity. After two long years of investing, planning, and crying a bit, with the help of my mom I was able to open up a small plant-based cafe in the heart of a very hungry community.
As more become interested in a healthier lifestyle, we will grow. It won’t happen overnight as we are all constantly learning, unlearning and relearning but this journey has been an unforgettable one, and I hope to make it a tad easier for people to believe they can do it.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Till today we face challenges, but without a challenge how can we grow? There have been moments I thought I couldn’t do it anymore. Times where I felt I wasn’t doing enough, or I felt I didn’t know how to manage a team and keep them happy, times when bad customer experiences affected my entire week, but I learned when one thing doesn’t work, try another.
To be successful here, I need to balance great management and team building skills, customer satisfaction, food quality, restaurant ambiance, creativity, organizational skills, and immense responsibility and with all of this there will be struggles, but it’s worth it, and I can do it, learning more and more everyday.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Splurge Juice Bar and Cafe – what should we know?
Splurge is a small cafe with a big heart. It’s 100% plant-based, no animal products are used nor needed. We love supporting local vendors such as Vegan Schmegan Bakery and Atlas Meatless Deli by incorporating their products. Our team is driven by passion, they work hard and believe in the vision themselves. I wanted Splurge to be similar o walking into my house, warm and delicious!
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I think it’s important to understand, the only moment that exists is right now, the mistakes from the past can be learned from, and our future lies within our hands and willingness to push forward with a positive attitude. Know what it is that you really desire, then with all your heart never stop till it’s achieved.
