Today we’d like to introduce you to Katrina Snyder Expert Timing.
Katrina, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
Jeff and I have been together for a long time but I wasn’t a musician for many years of that. After attending Fest in Gainesville (2014) I decided I really wanted to play music. I started learning bass, Jeff learned drums (he was a bass & guitar player for all of his previous music experience) and we partnered with our friend Victor to start a band. After a year, that band ended but Jeff and I were determined to keep working on music together. We were offered a show opening for Dikembe and Slingshot Dakota so we resolved to write enough songs for a short set and that’s how Expert Timing was born! Initially our friend Tim played drums but then moved away to the Tampa area. We were lucky enough to meet Gibran shortly after and he has been our drummer ever since. We’re very grateful for that first show since we’ve become good friends with both Dikembe & Slingshot. Dikembe’s Death Protector Collective released our first EP “Selective Hearing” as well as our debut full length “Glare” that just came out October 23rd.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
Jeff and I are constantly bouncing ideas off of each other and learning new ways to try and merge those creative ideas. When it comes to writing lyrics, we try to be honest about our thoughts and what’s happening in our lives. We have a lot of fun playing our songs for audiences so we try and make sure that comes across during our shows. We’ve been told that the love we have for each other and for playing music really brings positivity and warmth to our shows and honestly that’s the best compliment, and also the most ideal experience we could hope people have when watching us.
Artists rarely, if ever pursue art for the money. Nonetheless, we all have bills and responsibilities and many aspiring artists are discouraged from pursuing art due to financial reasons. Any advice or thoughts you’d like to share with prospective artists?
Even when it’s tough, just keep making art in whatever form that may be. Making a living as an artist, especially a musician, is so difficult in this current climate, but that doesn’t mean you should stop trying. Just keep creating honest art that means something to you. The three of us work our non-creative day jobs, but that really forces us to appreciate any time we get to spend making/playing music.
