Meet Wendi Weiner of The Writing Guru in Aventura

Today we’d like to introduce you to Wendi Weiner.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I have always been a writer and the person my friends and family turned to when writing essays and resumes. Candidly, I have over 15 years of expertise in resume writing, essay writing, and professional editing.

My parents nicknamed me “The Writing Guru” and in early 2010, my mom encouraged me to start a writing business because as she said, “You are too talented not to be a professional writer.” 7 years later, here I am! I grew my expertise pretty quickly in the industry, mostly because of my talents in writing, my legal background, and passion for helping others. Professionally, I’ve been an attorney for 12 years and served as a college writing professor for 7 years. My legal background includes working in big law, mid-size firms, and in-house for a Fortune 200 company.

I acquired 4 resume writing and career coaching certifications, and became the country’s only Nationally Certified Resume Writer (NCRW) who is also an attorney.

There are approximately 50 resume writers in the world who have this certification, which is considered the PhD in resume writing.

I grew my exposure in the industry and earned the title of #1 Resume Expert by Recruiter.com and was awarded Best Resume Writer and Executive Career Coach by Corporate America magazine. I also earned the invitation to be a Forbes Career Coach, and contributing writer for The Huffington Post and Thrive Global. My work has been featured in Forbes, Inc., Fortune, Business News Daily, The Muse, Monster, Careerealism (now WorkItDaily), CareerBuilder, and more. I’m proud to serve leadership in the industry as a board member for The National Resume Writers’ Association (I am the President-Elect for 2018), and I frequently speak at national conferences.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
My own career as an attorney was filled with a lot of roadblocks and obstacles. I was always changing jobs because I was never happy. The common denominator was that law was not for me.

When I really began to put effort into my writing business (which was a part-time freelance business) in late 2013, my internal entrepreneur was exposed and it became clear to me that I was destined to do this full-time.

Business ownership has been something I’ve soared at because of my love and passion for writing.

I have a true love for helping others, particularly in helping them to brand themselves for a career that fulfills them. I work primarily with executives and senior business leaders. 45% of my clients are attorneys as I relate closely to their challenges.

As someone who has a JD and who left practicing law to pursue an entrepreneurial venture, the way I was taught to analyze an issue in law school and real-life practical aspects of being a lawyer (and serving in the trenches of litigation) has helped me tremendously in rising to the top as a career expert. My professional success has been formulated in large part by my educational background. The struggle is in the time parameters since I am a one-woman show. I work long hours, and put in close to (if not over) 100 hours a week for my business. However, it never feels like work because I love what I do.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about The Writing Guru – what should we know?
More than 90% of my clients are senior business leaders, executives, and the c-suite. I develop strategic branding for their career and leadership value. My skill is in getting to know my clients, discovering their unique value proposition, and leveraging those items to create a personal brand that effectively markets them in the digital age. I am known for creating powerful LinkedIn profiles, resumes, cover letters, and other branding content. What separates me apart from others is my educational background as an attorney (who had a focus in appellate and legal writing) and true talent for expressive writing. I personally have a massive writing portfolio with more than 100 features in over 40 major media outlets. I output a lot of content in addition to working one-on-one with clients. I’ve written articles that have gone viral in major outlets and have had a resounding impact with the legal community, particularly attorneys who are dissatisfied with their career path. I am most proud of being a leader in the resume and careers industry and helping to shape a positive image for the industry.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
The success of my business has been shaped in large part by the influence and support of my parents, Howard and Michele, who I label as my “admin team.”

Both of them really saw my talent and passion for writing at an early age. I learned to read at the age of 3, and my mom boasts that I was writing poetry and short stories soon after that. She has a binder with all of my work and a large part of why I am where I am today is because of them.

My parents nicknamed me “The Writing Guru” and in early 2010, my mom encouraged me to start a writing business because as she said, “You are too talented not to be a professional writer.” My parents owned a publishing business in my early formative years, and my dad has always been a wonderful asset in giving me sound business advice and client relationship skills. My mom is the brains behind keeping my client data so that I never have to worry about missing the factual info on my client lists. I am fortunate that their business background and leadership background in education (my dad was a principal and my mom was an assistant principal) has impressed upon me a strong work ethic. They shifted their own careers during my teenage years, and they also put in 100-hour work weeks up until they retired several years ago. I guess you can say, a hard work ethic runs in the family.
