Life and Work with Rock Evans

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rock Evans.

Rock, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I have always been active through playing sports when I was younger. I played soccer, baseball, participated in gymnastics and had a huge growth spurt when I was 12 and had to stop doing gymnastics. That’s when I found cheerleading. In high school, I was forced to choose between playing baseball seriously and cheerleading, in which I chose cheerleading, and continued to play tennis throughout high school. In college, as a cheerleader at the University of Maryland, I discovered weightlifting, which at the time, I hated.

Once I graduated and had no direction on how to exercise. I knew what I did from lifting via cheerleading practices while recovering from a surgery from a wrist fracture. I feel in love with it, as a means of staying active and the results that I was getting from lifting.

I moved from MD to Miami to do my master’s degree in Marine Science and while I was in graduate school, I began working at Equinox. While I was there, I fell even more in love with the fitness experience and decided that once I graduated, I wanted to pursue being a personal trainer because of my educational background in biology (my undergraduate degree) and my passion for fitness mixed with my people skills. Since then, I have switched to only doing Group Fitness at Equinox and started my own personal training and online company, Rock Evans Fitness. I have a broad reach but my main focus is for LGBTQ+ individuals to help them reach their goals to the best of my ability!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has not been a smooth track because of a few reasons. One would be the fact that I moved here to pursue marine science and now I’m doing something outside of that field. I had a bit of pushback from my family until they saw how much I love doing what I do.

The other challenge is getting people over the barrier of understanding fitness and knowing that your fitness journey can start at ANY point and I can help them. I think it’s important to not be intimidated, as hard as that sounds, by the gym. I try and make myself accessible enough to my online clients to coach them to be confident enough on their own accord in the gym.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Rock Evans Fitness – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of  as a brand and what sets you apart from others.
I am a physique competitor so I do a lot of work on hypertrophy but I work in a majority of modalities to ensure that me and my clients move in all planes of motion and are proficient at a movement. I specialize in kettlebell, animal flow, body weight training, dumbbells, and Olympic lifting.

I am the proudest of my clients. Seeing them reach their goals, whatever that may be, makes me happier than anything. What sets me apart is my drive and accessibility. I am there for my clients through every step of their journey to coach them and teach them all that I can.
