Today we’d like to introduce you to Joseph Fucigna.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I have always wanted to be an artist. I guess the creative genes came from my father’s side of the family. My grandfather and father were not very good at following directions and making or fixing things in a traditional way. They fixed and built things using tape, glue, and string. I later realized this “Rube Goldberg” approach to solving problems was something I should not be embarrassed about but instead embrace. To this day, I thank them for those specific creative genes they passed along to me. I also hate following directions, or building or fixing things in the proper way. It is frustrating, never works at the end and always leaves me in a foul mood. But give me some plastic fencing and cable-ties and allow me the freedom to make it up as I go along and I will create something magical.
Please tell us about your art.
I am a sculptor who enjoys taking modest industrial materials such as plastic fencing and cable ties and transforming them into elegant yet provocative abstractions that speak about the inherent qualities of the materials, process, and craft. Creating objects of possibilities that balance suggestive content and the formal qualities of the material is the ultimate goal.
We often hear from artists that being an artist can be lonely. Any advice for those looking to connect with other artists?
Use social media, attend art openings and conferences, visit galleries and museums, set-up studio tours and apply for art residencies. Do anything where you can mingle with your other artists and creative souls.
