Today we’d like to introduce you to Sharma Shari Rodriguez.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I went to school in Puerto Rico…for engineering. I graduated as a Computer Engineer and worked for three years before realizing that the cubicle life was not for me. I left home and move to Atlanta, GA to pursue a Master’s Degree in Fine Arts in Photography. After school, life and marriage brought me to Tampa FL first, where I decided to venture into Wedding and Portraiture Photography.
After working as a wedding photographer for three years, I decided to specialize even further into weddings for couples that are non-traditional, geeky, or simply the ones that want to do the wedding their way. The more weddings I booked of this couples, the more I was falling in love back again with wedding photography.
Today, I am the geek photographer. The photographer for those couples that don’t feel completely represented by the wedding industry standards or that simply wants to do it their way.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
As every challenge in life, it hasn’t. Even though I had the photography knowledge needed to be a photographer, being a WEDDING photographer is a different thing. I struggled with the fact that no many established photographers were open to discuss their process or how they started. Fear of competition made it harder to find people willing to help. Also, there were no straightforward answers most of the time, as what are the steps to follow to become a photography business owner. Luckily, I love browsing the internet and was able to find the info needed. Also, met amazing photographers willing to help me get started.
Another struggle, as a creative that I was dealing with, was finding my own voice/Style. You have to keep shooting until you find that voice!
Sharma Shari Photography – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am a wedding photographer who specialized in nontraditional couples. Couples that want to do their wedding their way, no matter if it is a full themed wedding or just a backyard party! I love couples that are not afraid to break tradition or do them all, the important thing is that they do what they want.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success for me, have to be a combination of making a living wage, be happy with what are you doing and serving your clients well. You have to check your self every once in a while and ask yourself:
– Am I happy with what I am doing?
– Am making a living?
– Am I serving my clients well, are my clients happy?
If any of those answers is no, something needs to change!
