Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamila Powell.
Jamila, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I got in the beauty industry the year after I had my daughter, Magnolia Rose. I have always had an entrepreneurial spirit, but the birth of my daughter pushed me to dream big. I started with a salon geared towards hair extensions, and then decided I wanted to go in the direction of people embracing their natural hair texture. I decided to change the name of the salon to Maggie Rose, after my daughter. After specializing in one area of texture, I met Isabella Vazquez (@Curlpop) who opened my eyes and mind to servicing all textures. Isabella Vazquez is a pioneer in the Hair industry, and the CEO of Curlpop. We partnered up and changed the scope of Maggie Rose, to be a salon that caters to all textures, just not one. We are the only Curlpop Salon in the world. Our goal is to provide a quality experience to all of our guests, while also catering to their beauty, inside and out. Our plan is to expand to impact cities, and help everyone embrace, and love who they are.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely has not been a smooth journey, but I wouldn’t change a thing. There are so many aspects of business that require your attention, and a certain skill level. When you are a small business, you have to wear many hats. I have felt overwhelmed many times. My one piece of advice is to never give up, keep learning, be willing to adjust, ask for help, and remain true to your vision.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Maggie Rose Salon – what should we know?
We are known for the Curlpop Cut. We specialize in textured hair. I’m most proud of my partnership with Isabella, and my team. What sets Maggie Rose apart, is the experience, and customer service you receive when you walk through our doors. We are there for the clients, to educate, listen, and to give them an amazing look.
We’re interested to hear your thoughts on female leadership – in particular, what do you feel are the biggest barriers or obstacles?
In general, I think the biggest barriers are the lack of support and accessibility to resources. In addition, it is very hard to not be placed in a box, and be evaluated on your merit.
