Meet Trailblazer Alisha

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alisha.

Alisha, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Growing up, I’ve always been a social butterfly and lover of life. I thrive off of doing something new, a good vibe, music, and crowd. Miami is certainly the perfect place for all of the above.

It’s not easy being a woman navigating the professional world, family, friendships, romantic relationships in Miami. Sometimes, you feel like what the hell am I doing?! Like, is there a guide to this? Like, a Google search? Something. Geez. Other times, you feel like Billy badass thinking you have everything under control. I’ve come to learn that everything is a matter of perspective and navigating through this messy, but exhilarating city is all about how you handle the twists and turns.

So, I said to myself, “Self, why not create a space where folks in Miami can seek and find inspiration, motivation, cultural enlightenment, career resources and more?!” And then I did the thing.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It wasn’t always a smooth road, that’s for sure. Hey Alisha originally started as a travel blog as I traveled often for work, turned into a blog about pop culture and celebrity happenings. Although I love traveling and talking about the latest Real Housewives episode, the blog didn’t speak to my heart. In my opinion, you do things with passion. If you’re not feeling passionate about, if it isn’t striking a fire beneath you, don’t do it. Or do it until you find something that does.

One thing I’ve always had a passion for is helping others. It’s probably my strength and weakness, but nonetheless, I always try to incorporate helpful advice on love and life on Hey Alisha throughout the years. In my journey, I found that I genuinely love this Magic City and I felt that I have many connections to the culture, food, and lifestyle of Miami. Why not share it? Why not connect with others on it? At the end of the day, I want to do what makes me happy and I turned that into a brand.

When you are just starting out, think of these three things: Does it tickles your pickle (passion)? Is it reflective of who you really are? Does it give you joy? If you can answer “yes” to all of the above, then keep going. Keep pushing, keep creating and keep writing. If you answered “no” then restrategize, rethink, and align your brand, blog, art, etc. with your purpose. Ask yourself this often and be honest with yourself. It will eventually fall into place and you will see the fruits of your labor and hard work.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Hey Alisha! – what should we know?
I categorize myself as Miami’s Culture Curator. As a brown girl in this city, it’s sometimes hard to find the culture of this city. Whether it’s a new restaurant, art show or professional event, where can you find said things? I truly found that there wasn’t a space for it. So, here I am. I believe in uplifting the art and works of people, especially women, of this city. Showcasing their books, fashion designs, natural beauty products, educational campaigns, professional networks, etc. I am proud to say that we’ve highlighted works of some incredible women and through this journey of discovery, I have met so many phenomenal people who have shown me a new side of life and have also inspired me in many ways. I believe that my love of life, ability to not take myself so seriously, candid outlooks and outspokenness set me apart from the rest. I’m not here to post a million pictures next to a palm tree and add a caption “#MIA”. I mean I love a good palm tree pic, but there’s more to life and Miami…

So much of the media coverage is focused on the challenges facing women today, but what about the opportunities? Do you feel there are any opportunities that women are particularly well positioned for?
I do believe that there is more of a discussion on the challenges women face today, especially in the workplace. That alone is certainly progress from where we were as a society even ten years ago. I’m also a believer that even though we are challenged as women professionally, we are also as great as we set ourselves up to be. Women can and are the best leaders in my biased opinion. With our education, compassion, and integrity we are certainly made to shatter the hell out of glass ceilings in multi-million dollar corporations or small businesses. I am also passionate about entrepreneurship opportunities for women. Why work for someone else’s dream, when you can create and have your own?
