Check out Kourtney Sinclair’s Artwork

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kourtney Sinclair.

Kourtney, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I always had an interest in art growing up. Throughout middle school I was friends with people who were very art inclined and I remember always watching them draw and thinking, “Wow, I wish I could do that,” but somehow it never really crossed my mind to try. The summer before my sophomore year I ended up spending 7 weeks enrolled in a creative outreach program at a local cultural arts center, and that experience opened my eyes even further to the world of art. I fell in love after being exposed to so many different forms and expressions, and from then on, I spent loads of time drawing from reference and pretty much teaching myself the foundation of illustration.

We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I create illustrations with a variety of different media including watercolor, graphite, gouache and digital. I honestly create art for the fun of the process, and while I consider art an amazing platform to illustrate personal messages I don’t showcase much of that with my own work. I think the biggest inspiration I hope for people to take away from my work is myself– as vain as that sounds lol. One of my biggest goals is for it to become commonplace to see more women of color in more nonconventional and creative careers.

What do you know now that you wished you had learned earlier?
My advice for other artists would be to spend some time with yourself and figure out what kind of artist you really are, or want to be. Every artist isn’t going to benefit from the same tricks and tips. Where some artists thrive off of competition and comparing themselves, that same comparison can cripple another artists motivation. I wish I figured that out for myself earlier. Learn yourself, figure out what is it that makes you want to draw and then hold on to that thought because there will definitely be harder times to come.

Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
People can see my work on my Instagram page: www.instagram.com/amandaksinclair. I also just started posting videos on my YouTube channel that will be focusing on art process videos as well as discussions on the struggles of being a young artist balancing school, a job and art. As of now I have no stores or commissions open so the best way to support would be to follow me on the aforementioned social media sites!
