Today we’d like to introduce you to Worley Faver.
Worley Faver is a Palm Valley, Florida based Artist whose family has resided in Florida since 1873. He began drawing as a 6-year-old child. Today Worley creates pottery utilizing ancient techniques, only using tools that could be created in the forest. During a visit to Santa Fe, New Mexico when he was 50 years old, Worley discovered magnificent Pueblo pottery for the first time and decided to dedicate himself to creating handmade coil pottery for the rest of his life. Today, his work is acquired by fine art collectors throughout the United States and Canada.
Please tell us about your art.
My pottery is handmade using the ancient coil method, without a mechanical wheel. The pieces are never glazed. For a shining surface, the work is burnished with a smooth stone. Some pieces are smoked to create natural patinas from black to light brown. My favorite epic hero has always been Odysseus. My favorite line In the Odyssey reads, “All art is laughter to relieve us from Life’s grief.” This is the reason I am dedicated to my Art, I truly feel that fine art is created to help people enjoy their life and gives a definite therapeutic benefit.
All of my designs are a result of early morning meditation and travels to Israel. England, Romania, Brazil, Mexico, Peru, Hawaii, Bahamas, and the Caribbean. It is the joy of my life to take those designs and create work that is appreciated and loved by collectors throughout North America.
What do you think about conditions for artists today? Has life become easier or harder for artists in recent years? What can cities like ours do to encourage and help art and artists thrive?
Conditions for true Artists today is in fine shape. Communication advances, i.e., websites, social media, newspapers, magazines, have all been beneficial. However, in my opinion, nothing is more important than the personal communication between the Artist and Collector.
Also, in my opinion, the collector needs to see the actual piece of Art. Fine Art has a way of communicating with the observer. Sometimes I believe certain works are created for a particular individual. Many times, I have seen a collector touch a piece of my pottery and say, “This piece speaks to me and I must have it.”
I believe most cities are doing a superb job of supporting the Arts. I would encourage our city governments to continue to realize the multi-faceted benefits of supporting Artists, Galleries, Public Art and Museums.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
At present, my work can be seen at my home studio in Palm Valley, FL, Stellers Gallery, Jacksonville, FL, Grand Bohemian galleries in Mountain Brook, AL, Asheville, NC, Charleston, SC, Savannah, GA, and my website gallery.
My greatest joy over the last 30 years has been the lasting friendships made with my fine art collectors. Serious collectors rarely acquire only one piece, but continue to purchase work for years.
