Meet Trailblazer Sandy Carvalho

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sandy Carvalho.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
When I graduated college with an accounting degree, I went down the path I thought made the most sense and one that would make my parents very proud of me; I went on to study and pass all four CPA exams and started my career at one of the Big Four accounting firms. I worked in NYC and thought I was living the dream; big city, big career. What more could I ask for? I quickly realized that auditing financial statements weren’t my passion in life. I also realized that dreams don’t come true overnight. You have to work hard for them, be persistent, and most of all, patient. I also realized that there’s no such thing as the “perfect time” to start chasing your dreams. My current passion: Sandy like the Beach Blog. I still work full time in finance in NYC, but I’m doing what I love on the side. I love sharing my story through fashion and inspiring other people to look and feel their best. Life is too short to wait for opportunities, you have to create them yourself and never give up. Although my blog is currently only something I get to work on late at night or on weekends, it’s still fulfilling and satisfying for me. I hope to make it my full-time job one day, but for now, I’m very happy where I am in my life.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I don’t believe it’s ever a smooth road to get to where you truly want to be. Things in life that are worth having are never easy to attain, but that’s what makes it that much more rewarding when you succeed. I struggle with comparison. The blogging industry is a very saturated market and it’s easy to drown in the comparison game and get lost in who you really are and why you chose to dive headfirst into this fairly new industry. My biggest advice would be to stay true to who you are no matter what. People will always connect with real, raw emotion. No matter how alone you may feel at times or how hard things can get, I can guarantee that there’s something else in this world feeling the exact same way and you could comfort them by sharing your story. Always be humble and kind and things will take the right turn if you stay persistent and work hard.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Sandy like the Beach Blog – what should we know?
I share my fashion and style through my blog. I also share personal stories and wedding planning updates. I use my blog as a platform to connect with people and share my love for fashion in order to inspire other women to express themselves in a way that makes them feel most beautiful. I’m most proud of my vulnerability and realness. My life isn’t perfect and I would never want to portray it in that way. I think what sets me apart from others is my story; I’m still trying to do what I truly love while juggling a full-time, demanding finance job in corporate NYC. I also commute into the city, which takes up 2+ hours of my day. It isn’t easy getting home at 8 pm at night and having to scramble dinner together and still have enough energy to get on the computer, edit photos, and prepare the next blog post. I’m not perfect and I will never pretend to be, but I will always give it all I’ve got to be the best version of myself.

Which women have inspired you in your life?
Rihanna. She’s such a beautiful and powerful woman. She has always expressed herself in a way that says “this is me, take it or leave it” and I have always admired her for that. She expresses herself through fashion and doesn’t ever apologize for who she is. She has a carefree spirit but she holds the biggest place in her heart for her family and closest friends. She embodies a lot of who I believe I am; confident, fun-loving, hard-working, & independent.
