Today we’d like to introduce you to Marc Shuster.
Marc, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
At 15 years old I became a World Champion in the sport of Cable Wakeboarding. Wakeboarding is essentially like snowboarding on water for those who are unfamiliar. I rode competitively for many years and had a lot of fun and success in the process although as much as I loved the sport, I realized by body was not going to allow for this to be a long-term career path.
My name is Marc Shuster, I’m a 28-year-old comedian, rapper and professional wakeboarder from Boca Raton Florida.
I began wakeboarding at age 13 at Ski Rixen USA, located in Deerfield Beach Florida and immediately fell in love. I quickly advanced to the pro ranks and was even fortunate enough to win a World Championship title at the age of 15.
After a series of injuries and losing my father I started to compete less and begin focusing on myself and working a regular day job. This was rather daunting as I felt wakeboarding defined me as a person. Outside of the sport I struggled to find passion for other outlets; until I found comedy and freestyle rapping.
This was something I struggled with at first because of my ego as a professional athlete, I had trouble opening up for fear of being judged or shamed. After finally mustering up the courage to release my content, I began to rap about silly subjects and perform comedy character skits on Instagram and YouTube which immediately became a favorite among my friends, family and my small new audience of fans.
As I became more comfortable opening up, more people began to watch and interact with my content which has led me to some amazing opportunities. While this journey hasn’t become my full-time job yet, it has allowed me to move to Los Angeles to work with similar content creators and land some awesome writing/performing gigs.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I guess the best way to categorize myself is as a mix between comedian Kevin Hart and Lil Dicky the rapper. I’m a short funny looking white dude who can rap well about silly subjects. I’m not from the streets, nor have I had a really tough upbringing so my raps are mainly about squeezing boobies and drinking smoothies. I try to keep them fun and entertaining while still attempting to stay strong lyrically.
I also create comedy character skits which are always a blast to make. I have a “stoner” character named Chet who is always finding himself in hilarious situations as well as my “rap persona” named Phatdik. He’s essentially a super exaggerated version of B-Rad from Malibu’s most wanted but he actually has some skills.
The inspiration is just to have fun and make people laugh. When I’m performing I can do and say things that I would never say in my day to day life so it’s a great way for me to relieve stress. I honestly just try to make content that I personally find funny or enjoy creating.
Do you think conditions are generally improving for artists? What more can cities and communities do to improve conditions for artists?
I think the conditions for artists today is getting much better. It’s both easier and harder to get noticed than ever because of the internet. You have things going viral that shouldn’t and there’s a lot of real talent going unnoticed as a result. On the other hand, it’s also easier than ever to find like-minded people to collaborate with around the globe. It’s a mixed bag but I’m happy with where we are headed.
Cities like Miami are doing a great job to encourage and help artists thrive although ultimately you have to be hungry and constantly refining your craft to truly thrive in my opinion.
