Meet Preston Campbell of A Custom Space in Delray Beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to Preston Campbell.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
For as long as I can remember, I’ve always had a strong passion for design and creativity. It all began back when I was a child, designing tree houses and forts in the backyard, this eventually shifted to bars and tailgate games in college, finally ending up where we are today, designing commercial spaces. It has been an interesting journey but all of this plays into the creative approach we use today.

After college, I spent several years in sales and business consulting. It was during this time that I was able to understand just how important a company’s culture truly is to an organization. I believe it’s the key factor in retaining engaged and productive employees as well as pulling in the best new talent. We take this belief into every project we do. At the end of the day, I always ask myself “is this somewhere I would be proud to work and want to come to everyday?” It’s our goal on every project to leave the employees feeling excited about their new workspace.

If I had to pin it down, I’d say my drive comes from the thrill of identifying a problem or a need and then challenging myself with coming up with a unique and creative solution. There’s nothing better than having a client and their team be blown away by the end result. While some are content simply replicating current designs, I’ve always chosen the route of trying to improve upon what’s out there and truly take the projects to the next level.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
When you attempt to change the mold, no road will be smooth. That’s exactly what we strive to do here at A Custom Space. It’s no secret that when it comes to salespeople and contractors most come into the relationship skeptical. It seems everyone still pictures the “used car salesman” who is looking to take advantage. We ask our clients to step outside this view and look at us more as a partner or friend and less as a contractor. This is exactly how we view our customers; even after the project is complete, we still keep in contact and support their growth where we can.

When we establish this type of relationship, we are able to achieve greatness! We believe that there’s no reason that your space should be directly tied to how high your budget is. Yes, this does impact the level of creativity we can achieve, but everyone deserves a unique space that they can be proud of.

Once budgeting and design are finalized, we will do everything in our power to make those dreams become reality. In the furniture world, there are endless avenues to reach the desired design. We can mix and match custom built products with vendor solutions to help you achieve the goal while staying on budget. In every space we do, we attempt to give the client at least one focal point that sets their space apart from the rest.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about A Custom Space – what should we know?
Before entering the furniture business, I was made aware of how complex the process of designing a new space was. Friends would tell me of their struggles with long lead times and contractor complications. Some may call it naive, but I believed the process could be simplified. I envisioned a company that was trustworthy and honest and worked with their clients to give a quick and creative solution at a reasonable cost. Today we are partnered with over 60 furniture vendors and custom fabrication shops, all of which have lead times under 6 weeks.

Our belief is that you’re most profitable when working on your business, not when managing contractors. This is why we attempt to make the process “turn-key” and allow you to keep growing your company while we handle the rest. From the initial furniture layout to the final installation, we handle everything in house. This greatly reduces the stress and time burden placed on our clients and from our experience results in a much more streamlined approach. We keep our company intentionally small to maintain fast lines of communication and decision making while managing overhead cost. This delivers a far better experience to our customers, allowing for immediate responses to questions and concerns as well as allowing us to meet most budget requirements.

While we specialize in offices, we also do retail, restaurants, and medical facilities. We have worked with both large corporations who are building out several floors all the way down to the startup companies building out their first office. No matter the size of the project, we always pour our heart and soul into each job and treat each relationship with the same level of respect and importance.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My biggest influence has to be my sister, Courtney. She has an amazing branding and positioning company, Campbell Creative. It was through her company that A Custom Space was born.

She would work with her clients to build amazing brands, however when the design themes were relayed to the contractors who were building out their spaces, it seemed to always fall short.

Our belief is that your customers should immediately begin to get to know your brand and culture by simply walking into your space. We place every item with an intention to help shape the experience of your customers and allow them to get to know your company. Not only does this help make a great first impression, but it also creates a fun and inspiring workplace for your team.
