Today we’d like to introduce you to Cary Diaz.
Cary, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My love for photography began many years ago, while I shadowed my father, a professional photographer during the film era. Throughout my childhood and teenage years, that love grew. When my first child, Matthew, was born in 2010, I purchased my first DSLR camera and could not put it down. A few months after he was born, I embarked on this crazy journey. My husband noticed how much I enjoyed photographing my son and family members and he encouraged me to turn my passion into a business. At the moment, I thought he was crazy. He volunteered me to shoot a complimentary session of a quinceanera for fun. When I posted the photos to my personal social media accounts, many complimented me. It was the spark I needed to start my business. I created a website, social media accounts for my business, and tireless worked on building a valuable portfolio. I not only build a successful business but my husband and I added two more babies to the family, Kailey & Khloe.
In November of 2018, it will make 7 years that I’ve been in business. On average, CDP now shoots over 200 sessions per year. Newborn sessions and first birthday sessions are among the most popular, along with watch me grow sessions, quinces, family portraits and events.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It was definitely NOT a smooth road. Everything that is valuable in life takes time, patience and loads of work. Being a mother of 3 and running a reputable business is not always easy.
In the early years, the biggest struggle was building a business with the right clients. I remember sitting in Barnes & Noble for countless hours reading books trying to better my craft. It took a while to narrow down what business model and path I wanted to set my business up for.
Along the way, I also had 2 pregnancies and as a result of the pregnancies, two retina detachment surgeries that left me blind from one eye for a few months with a less than desirable recovery.
Cary Diaz Photography – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Cary Diaz Photography (CDP) is a photography studio that specializes in portrait photography. The most popular sessions I shoot are during the baby’s first year, especially newborn and 1st birthday sessions. CDP also shoots family sessions, quinces sessions, engagement sessions and events.
I am most proud of the entire experience I’ve created for my clients. It took many years to perfect a seamless workflow that makes the client feel special from start to finish. I take pride in always communicating quickly and effectively with a client from the first inquiry. Then the creative process takes over and once the session is completed and images are delivered, I feel satisfied knowing how appreciative the clients are and how enjoyable the whole process was for them. There is also nothing better than knowing you captured tiny pieces of families’ histories that they will forever cherish.
My work is characterized with vibrant colors and sharp, clean images. The use of color is a big part of my images and what sets me apart.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I think the proudest moment, or moments shall I say, is receiving a message from a client sharing their love and appreciation for you and what you just captured for them. Some of my clients have become great friends. It means the world to me when I get to continue sharing such beautiful moments with them throughout the years.
