Today we’d like to introduce you to Heidy Garcia.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Everything started 14 years ago back when I used to live in the Dominican Republic. I was 17 and I needed to do some community service in order to get my high school diploma.
I decided to do it working at a Dermatology Hospital. I spent 3 months working for free. But there was no payment big enough as the experience I earn while working in that hospital, plus, I got my teenage acne treated!
Once the 3 months were done, the medical director asked me to stay with them as a trainee for a Medical Esthetician position they had at an important Derm hospital. I said YES without hesitating and it has been one of the best decisions of my life. I spent 7 years in that position while working with them, I decided to go to college and get my associates degree. The fact that I was actually already putting into practice whatever I learned at school, helped me to graduate with honors.
After spending 7 years with them, I decided to open my own space. I had patients that came over to see me from different parts of the country. During this period, I did not only grow as a facialist but also as a businesswoman, something that was going to be of use in the future.
After a while, I had to move by myself to Miami. I remember being asked by a friend, what I was planning to work at while living in Miami. I replied that I wanted to continue to work at what I was good at, meaning being a facialist. She laughed at me. Ever since that moment, I decided that if it was in my hands, I was going to do what was needed to continue working in the field that I truly loved.
And so, I did. Three days after moving to Miami, I went to Beauty School of America, I did everything needed to get my FI Skin Care Specialist License. Later on, a friend told me about a prestigious dermatology and that she had a position available at her clinic. I phone called, sent my resume and within days, I officially became a Medical Esthetician in the United States.
After 5 years working for her, I decided it was time to open my own place currently located at CityPlace in Doral, FL.
With 14 years of experience, I’m able to work doing what I love while helping other people feel better about themselves.
It’s just my passion, I enjoy seeing people’s faces after they get one of my treatments done. Especially, how I help teenagers gain their confidence back is priceless. It reminds me of 14 years ago when a different Heidy with bad teenage acne felt in love with a career that years layer will continue to be her first love.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I would call them challenges instead of obstacles.
Yes, I had some challenges. When I decide to go to college, I had to travel 4 hours by bus every week to get there. Back then, there was just one college teaching the course I wanted to take in the whole country.
When I moved to the USA, I wasn’t fluent in English, and when it came to speaking in English I used to get so shy, still do.
Since I grew up in DR I had my homesick moments.
And a million other challenges but this column won’t be long enough, lol!
But anyway, the key is perseverance and been as much as an optimistic as you can. It won’t be easy but that’s the only way.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about HGFacialist – what should we know?
My specialty is Medical Facials.
There are many differences when getting a facial with me rather than with somebody else. First the passion, second, the type of treatment which is a whole different experience than a conventional facial. For example, my blackheads extractions skills are amazing.
I do Dermaplaning Facial which is a deep exfoliation of the skin where I use a scalpel to remove the dead skin, followed by a Microdermabrasion, light hydrating peel, blackheads extractions, the CO2 therapy and a calming mask.
The Microdermabrasion Facial is my basic one and include extractions as well.
The Dermapen or micro needling helps the skin to repair itself, improving the acne scars appearance, building collagen and elastin.
Another procedure I do are Peels, Hydrafacial and Organic Spray Tan.
Finding a mentor and building a network are often cited in studies as a major factor impacting one’s success. Do you have any advice or lessons to share regarding finding a mentor or networking in general?
Social media is the key. I like more IG than Facebook.
I’m doing it by myself because I like the interaction with my followers.
Great customer service skills.
