Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle Weiner.
Michelle, please share your story with us.
I completed my residency and fellowship training at the University of Miami. I am double board certified in Interventional Pain Management and Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. As an Osteopathic Physician with a degree in Nutritional Sciences, I believe in preventative medicine and help my patients promote their natural healing. I practice personalized medicine focusing on the etiology and offering individualized holistic treatment options. The science is nowhere to individualize and customize a patient’s care, and also to assess the etiology of the problem — not solely treat the symptoms. As a Pain Physician, I find my patients are being treated with controlled substances like opioids which are addictive and life-threatening as well as injections that may be short lasting in effect. When medical marijuana became legal in Florida, I was dedicated to educating myself, physicians and patients about the medical benefits, safety profile and introducing a natural alternative to many chronic debilitating conditions. Many pharmaceuticals are depleting our nutritional status and causing side effects. I have successfully had experience weaning patients off their opioids, anxiety and sleep aides substituting CBD (Cannabidiol) and Cannabis increasing patients quality of life. I am currently doing research with Florida International University and will begin teaching the Endocannabinoid System, medical benefits of Cannabis in medical school. Considering the remarkable results I have seen, my algorithm for treating pain conditions such as fibromyalgia, chronic migraines, low back and neck pain and spasms as well as many neurodegenerative diseases has changed. Marijuana is a flexible medication, easy to titrate with solid research. I treat the whole person.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I was lucky to find other advocates in the Cannabis industry early on in my journeys such as Karen Goldstein from NORML and Carlos Hermida that has helped me network with other right-minded, passionate individuals who also believe cannabis is the future of medicine. At this time, I focus on patient satisfaction and education and try not to dwell on the fact that this medication is a schedule 1 drug, federally illegal and how that can affect my license. I enjoy giving case presentations so other medical professionals can illuminate the stigma behind marijuana. I view all people as potential patients; if they were to understand our endocannabinoid system, they would realize we all need CBD to maintain wellness and prevent chronic disease. I appreciate a challenge and am prepared with evidence-based medicine to help continue using cannabinoids, modulating the receptors and enzymes to make natural, effective personalized medicine.
Please tell us about Michelle Weiner, DO MPH LLC.
I personally educate all of my patients about their Endocannabinoid System which maintains homeostasis in our body so they understand how one medicine can treat a multitude of conditions and how different doses, ratios of cannabinoids and routes of administration can be used for different symptoms. As a pain physician, I am most proud of the patients I have been able to wean off their opioids and benzodiazepines for anxiety safely and improve their quality of life. I give hope to many patients whos oncologists or pain physicians run out of options. I combine cannabis with functional medicine and mindfulness, meditation and physical movement techniques to help them live their optimal life.
