Today we’d like to introduce you to Ben Katzaman.
Ben, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
In twenty fourteen, I got lost riding my motorbike through the Bali jungle. I eventually came to a village of talented carvers struggling to make a living. After spending time in their huts, meeting their families and watching their art come to life, I asked him the carve an infinity sign that I could purchase to take back as a gift for a friend. Without knowing it, I had just commissioned the first Wanderer Bracelet. Realizing that, I haven’t been lost at all, the next bracelet was a symbol I’d sketched: a round eye, a reminder to open my eyes to new horizons. That symbol became our logo and the testimony to the incredible opportunities life presents when we are open to them.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Founding the company at 21 years old, there was a big learning curve. I rapidly had to learn everything from setting up e-commerce and campaigns to accounting, finance, and HR. As well as how to build and scale teams and facilities to keep up with demand.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Wanderer Bracelets story. Tell us more about the business.
It takes a village to make a Wanderer Bracelet… a 10-day endeavor of a patient and relaxed participation. There is no factory, no large machinery, no waste. Just human intuition and artistry born of generations of practice and expressed through skilled and caring hands. Our bracelets support a traditional way of life for the artisans and bring a one-of-a-kind memory to our customers.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
It was certainly luck that I happened to have met the carvers themselves when I thought I was lost and had the opportunity to grow this amazing endeavor together.
