Today we’d like to introduce you to Karl Can.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Karl. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Picture Framing Warehouse was established in 1993 specializing in custom framing and artwork. We began to promote unique artwork produced by many notable local artists. By developing exclusive relationships with these artists we were able to obtain the rights to reproduce and distribute works of art that were in high demand in our local community. artist’s such as George Thompson, Shari Hatchett Bohlmann, Jovan Obican, Ken Keeley and much more. Most notably we had much success with our local Hillsboro inlet painting done by George Thomspon.
All of our work has always been done on premises and due to the early success, we were able to expand from our original 6,000 sq. ft. facility to 3 more neighboring facilities. One was dedicated to a showroom to display many of our original pieces of artwork that were exclusive to us, having commissioned many different artists to create oversized canvas originals that no other competitors in our industry offered at the time. Our other facilities were dedicated to housing our work premises which included over 10 employees all committed to custom framing. Due to the sheer size of our facilities, we were capable of storing and offering hundreds of different molding options. Our custom framing while you wait service became extremely popular and played a huge role in our customer satisfaction. Today, due to certain economic downfalls and many changes in the art and framing industry we have downsized to our original facility and while many of our competitors failed to stay in business during the economic down times. Picture Framing Warehouse has been operating in the same location for the past 25 years and continues to provide Broward, Dade, and Palm Beach County with excellent craftsmanship and unbeatable prices.
Has it been a smooth road?
Business took a significant turn of events after the 9/11 attacks, after suffering a few years of depreciating sales, we began to recoup and pick up where we last started until the 2008 financial crisis related to the housing bubble. As our industry is considered a luxury and many homeowners were either losing their homes or barely making it. Most of our competitors in our area were going out of business and since our wholesale accounts play a major roll in our revenue this became detrimental to our being able to stay afloat. With determination and perseverance, we made the decision to downsize in order to cope with the economy we were in. After years of struggling, we were able to weather the storm and make it to where we are today
We’d love to hear more about your business.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
The city of Miami is notorious for its variety and exquisite taste in artwork. However, starting a business in today’s economy, where the online market plays a huge obstacle can be quite difficult. My suggestions for starting in this industry today would be to network with different artists and develop a relationship eventually discussing allowing you to either exclusively promote them or work out a consignment agreement. Once you have the ability to display and sell artwork from either an established artist or an up and coming artist you will reap the benefits of the publicity. A great example is Romero Britto, a well known Miami artist’s who gained much notoriety after creating a piece for the owner of absolute vodka. Those who stuck with Britto from day one are now having that dedication pay off. We have done the same with many of our local artist.
