Conversations with Ari “DJ Affect” Kalimi

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ari “DJ Affect” Kalimi.

Hi Ari “DJ Affect”, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I got my start in Miami as a teenager, teaching myself how to DJ and produce music from my bedroom. What started as something I did purely for the love of music quickly turned into a career, eventually leading to a long-standing residency at Club 11 and opportunities to work alongside some of the biggest names in music and nightlife.

My career took me from the club scene into Miami radio, where I eventually took over DJ Khaled’s radio show and became a voice on WEDR 99 Jamz and 103.5 The Beat. Over the years, I had the opportunity to work with artists including Timbaland, Pitbull, and Jason Derulo.

After launching my own ice cream brand, Mr Kream, I realized I had a real ability to build and scale businesses. That led me to start my own marketing agency, Affective Promotions, which has continued to grow by helping brands with marketing, experiences, nightlife, digital strategy, and business development.

Today, I’m continuing to evolve beyond being just a DJ. I’m focused on my own music, growing my businesses, and building DJ Affect into an artist and brand that represents everything I’ve learned along the way.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Definitely not. There have been a lot of highs, but there have also been some pretty difficult lows. The hardest part has been constantly having to reinvent myself as the industry changes. I’ve had moments where I questioned whether I should keep going, especially when something I spent years building suddenly changed or disappeared.

There were also financial risks, failed ventures, setbacks, and periods where I had to start over and figure things out without knowing exactly where the next opportunity was coming from. But I think those struggles are what taught me the most. Every time something didn’t work, I learned something that eventually helped me build the next thing.

I’ve realized the road doesn’t have to be smooth to be successful. You just have to keep moving.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My work has always lived at the intersection of music, nightlife, marketing, and business. I’m an open-format DJ, artist, entrepreneur, and the founder of Affective Promotions, a marketing agency focused on helping brands grow through experiential marketing, digital strategy, entertainment, and creative campaigns.

I’m probably best known for my work in Miami nightlife and music, but over the years I’ve realized that my biggest strength is understanding how to create attention and turn that attention into business. Launching my own ice cream brand, Mr Kream, really opened my eyes to how transferable my skills were outside of music. I realized I could take the same instincts I used to build a following as a DJ and apply them to building and scaling businesses.

What I’m most proud of, though, goes beyond my career. I’m incredibly proud to be a husband in a successful marriage and a father to two amazing kids. Everything I’ve built professionally means more to me because I’ve been able to build a family and a life alongside it. Being successful in business is important to me, but being there for my family and being someone my kids can be proud of is ultimately what matters most.

What sets me apart is that I’m not looking at marketing from behind a desk. I’ve spent years actually being in the room — in clubs, on stages, behind the scenes, building brands, creating experiences, and understanding what makes people pay attention. I think that combination of creativity, business experience, and real-world execution is what makes my approach different.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
Luck has definitely played a role in my life, both good and bad. I’ve been fortunate to be in the right place at the right time and to have opportunities come my way that changed the direction of my career. But I also believe luck only gets you so far. You have to be prepared when the opportunity shows up.

Some of the things I thought were bad luck at the time ended up forcing me to change direction and ultimately led me to something better. There have been plenty of moments where doors closed, businesses didn’t work out, or opportunities disappeared. Looking back, those moments taught me to stop depending on one thing and start creating my own opportunities.

I think the biggest “luck” in my life has been the people I’ve met, the experiences I’ve had, and the ability to recognize an opportunity when it’s in front of me. But I’ve also learned that sometimes what feels like bad luck is just life pushing you toward the next chapter.
