Today we’d like to introduce you to Elliott Broidy.
Hi Elliott, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I grew up in Los Angeles. My father was a World War II veteran who received a Purple Heart and later became a schoolteacher, and my mother was a nurse. I started working at various jobs at age 11. When I was 18, I used my savings to buy a coin-operated laundromat to help put myself through the University of Southern California.
I had always had a keen interest in how businesses operate and grow, so at USC I majored in accounting. That stellar education, along with my previous experiences, provided the foundation I needed to know the best way to launch a start-up, how to properly evaluate companies for investment opportunities, and understand how management decisions shape outcomes. Of course, my experiences after college were even more critical in that respect, because ultimately the best way to learn and to grow is to do.
After becoming a Certified Public Accountant and working at Arthur Andersen, I spent nine years running the office of Glen Bell, the founder of Taco Bell, advising him on investments in more than 120 companies.
I founded what later became Broidy Capital Holdings, working with and investing in companies in a variety of sectors.
The key turning point in my professional life was September 11, 2001. After the terrorist attacks, I felt an overriding responsibility to direct my time and resources toward national security and public safety and so I shifted my business focus toward those sectors. That commitment has shaped my work ever since.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, it hasn’t been a smooth road; it never is. Entrepreneurship inherently involves all-night sessions, seven-day weeks, the sacrifice of leisure and family time, and, of course, risk. All entrepreneurs have experienced shortcomings and failure, and the mark of the successful entrepreneur is that he or she interprets them as learning opportunities and a prod to work that much harder and smarter, rather than an indictment or a reason to quit.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Broidy Capital Holdings is a family office that invests in AI-driven public safety, homeland security, law enforcement, and defense technology. In these crucial sectors, AI-driven software is an indispensable force multiplier, enabling agencies to turn overwhelming amounts of information into actionable intelligence to protect communities. For example, one of our portfolio companies, LEO Technologies – of which I am co-founder and CEO – uses cutting-edge technology to correlate and prioritize reams of information from disparate sources in correctional facilities to assist correctional and law enforcement agencies in their decision-making related to the safety and security of everyone in the facilities and the public safety of our communities.
What differentiates Broidy Capital Holdings is our time horizon and discipline. We prioritize durability over rapid expansion and focus on businesses that provide essential services in public safety and homeland security. My business’s emphasis on the long-term is also reflected in my approach to philanthropy, which centers on supporting hospitals, social services organizations that work to help children in the foster care system, educational institutions, local police and sheriff’s departments, Jewish communal organizations, and nonprofits that combat antisemitism and extremism. In fact, I recently received the Visionary Award at this year’s annual Jewish American Heritage Month event on Capitol Hill. The award is given to Jewish people who make significant contributions to the health and welfare of our country.
I have more than four decades of business experience, during which I have founded, invested in, and, in many instances, managed as CEO more than 160 companies. I have more than a decade of experience at the intersection of AI and public safety. In sum, investors have an experienced, steady hand at the tiller when they are in business with Broidy Capital.
LEO Technologies recently announced the launch of Verus ION. This product, designed specifically for corrections and public safety agencies, continuously and automatically correlates information derived from disparate sources – including voice and text communications, camera feeds and many other siloed sources – into an agentic AI-powered unified actionable intelligence solution.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
I highly recommend Martin Gilbert’s biography of Winston Churchill. I respect and admire Churchill because he had a never-give-up attitude and an overriding belief in pursuing what was morally correct. I have faced challenges in my life, and this same attitude has helped me overcome these challenges and go forward with new, important ventures.
