Today we’d like to introduce you to Christian Lora.
Hi Christian , thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I never thought I was ever going to be a professional photographer. I bought a camera one day 6 years ago because I was serverly depressed. I needed some kind of outlet and I always thought photos were cool, so why not right? Even then I never wanted to take photos of people. I didn’t even want to talk to anybody. I started with street photography and that’s all I posted for about a month. Someone in the music industry recognized my talent and the rest is history. I don’t even talk to that guy anymore. Sucks.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It’s been anything but smooth. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE what I do and I am born for this. I truly feel that, but if it were easy everyone would be doing it right? I think the hardest part for me was maintaining my passion for something that has become my job. Does that make sense? In the beginning I got into it to escape, now I do it for a living. It’s very different. For that reason my personal creative projects mean more to me now than ever before.
Social media has also taken its toll on me. I mean I care about my art A LOT, maybe too much. I put my all into it, just for me to post it and people don’t even see it! It’s one thing if it’s seen and people don’t like it. Fine. But they don’t even get the chance to decide. I’ve had to learn how to be ok with doing it with no audience, cheers, or validation.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Haha oh man. Ok, I specialize in fashion, editorials, portrait, and some celebrity photography. My photos are known to be dramatic, harsh, controversial, and crisp. I use lighting techniques and color theory to relay emotion and energy in my work. I’ve had to privilege of working with some very recognizable people as my muses in some of these cases and I am know for all these things haha. Humbly of course.
That being said I think what I am most proud of is how far I’ve gotten. I’m a random guy from Paterson NJ who was able to finesse his way into the fashion and celebrity photography world in NYC not knowing a single soul in the industry! I mean I think that’s pretty cool right?
Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
Do the thing!! You know what I’m talking about, yes that thing!! Just do it!
