Rising Stars: Meet Yejidé Major of Miami / South Florida

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yejidé Major.

Hi Yejidé , thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hi! I’m Yejidé Major.
I am a fashion model from South Florida, and I’ve been modeling professionally for the past two years. Growing up in a Rastafarian household with two Caribbean parents from two different islands has added even more culture to my background. My family has always been artistically inclined, so the arts have always been a part of my life. My mom, born and raised in Jamaica, moved to Miami at a young age. She started out doing pageants, then began modeling in her early years. My dad also moved to Miami from Nassau, Bahamas, as a teen and pursued reggae music. He performed as a reggae singer for a while and toured multiple countries with the band Inner Circle before my parents had me and my three younger siblings. My sister and I started performing as a singing duo at a young age (6 & 8). We had our first performance at Miramar Kitty Carnival in 2009. Since then, we have traveled all over the US and other countries performing.

Because of my background, I was used to being on camera, so photoshoots were a common part of my life. As we entered our early adult years, my best friend and little sister, Aziza Major, developed a passion for commercial modeling. I encouraged her to take it seriously, and so she did! I was always there for her every step of the way, and while that gave me an idea of what it was like to be a model, I still wasn’t as interested yet. As time went on, I started consistently posting photos of myself on Instagram, and local photographers began reaching out to me to shoot. Shortly after, I started getting booked by brands/companies all over Broward and Dade County. Eventually, it became a no-brainer, and I soon started modeling professionally after that. Due to my upbringing, being in front of the camera has always been second nature for me, and I’m so grateful to be able to do it full-time.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Some of the biggest challenges I’ve dealt with in the modeling industry have been height-related. I fit into the “Petite” category, standing at 5’0″. Height is one of the biggest attributes you can possess as a model, especially when it comes to high fashion and editorial. Because of my size, fitness, commercial, e-commerce, and beauty modeling are best suited for me, which I love because these are the exact classes of modeling that inspired me to start. However, working as a model, especially here in Miami, I still experience discrimination from designers and producers from time to time. Thankfully, I’ve gotten to the point in my life where none of it affects me as a person. Because regardless of my height, once I step in front of the camera, my size no longer matters.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a professional fashion model, and I recently started my journey as a vlogger and vegan lifestyle content creator/streamer. I definitely believe my upbringing has a hand in setting me apart from other creators. My goal was to create content that I’d genuinely enjoy watching, and not to become a copy-and-paste vlogger. I’ve been vegan my entire life due to growing up in an Afrocentric, holistic, and Rastafarian family, so I get to make videos that showcase my actual, authentic life.

How do you think about happiness?
Elephants, sewing, baking, and the beach are some of my favorite things in the world! I’ve loved elephants since I was a little girl, as well as the beach. Being raised in Florida, the ocean is always there when you need it. Sewing is one of my favorite hobbies, and I am currently in the process of turning into a clothing brand! I share some of my designs on my TikTok page.
