Meet Barbara Myrthil of Business by Barbara

Today we’d like to introduce you to Barbara Myrthil.

Hi Barbara , it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My story really began when I realized I wanted to build a career that was about more than simply working a traditional 9-to-5.

While working professionally at FIU, I was also raising my son, who was diagnosed with autism and other unique abilities. That experience changed my perspective on what I wanted for my family and my future.

I began thinking about building a family business—something my son could eventually be part of, where he could develop independence and have opportunities of his own.

I started Business by Barbara providing tax preparation, business consulting, credit repair, and other services to my community. But as I worked with more families, I quickly realized the need was much bigger than I expected.

I was meeting mothers who were trying to manage their finances and businesses while caring for their children. Sometimes they would bring their children into my office, and I noticed there wasn’t really a place for the children to simply be themselves while their mothers handled important matters.

That became my turning point.

I realized that instead of asking mothers to fit into the traditional way of doing business, I could create a business that adapted to them and their families.

What started as a desire for flexibility became a mission to empower families, create opportunities, and build something that could eventually become a legacy for my own children.

Business by Barbara is not just about taxes, credit, or consulting for me. It’s about helping people move forward while creating a space where families feel understood and supported.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Building my business since 2015 has definitely not been a smooth road. One of the biggest challenges came with COVID-19, when I had to completely rethink how I could continue serving my clients while keeping everyone safe.

My office had to close, and suddenly my home became my office. I had to learn how to use technology and create a virtual system that allowed me to communicate with clients, collect documents, provide consultations, and continue serving people without having them physically in front of me.

It was challenging because I had built my business around personal interaction and being accessible to my community. But COVID forced me to become more adaptable and showed me that my business could serve people in a different way.

When things began opening back up, another challenge emerged: how to manage both worlds. I wanted to continue offering the convenience of virtual services while also having a physical presence where clients could come in and receive personal support.

Today, I see those challenges as some of the experiences that helped shape Business by Barbara. They taught me that when circumstances change, I don’t have to stop—I can adapt, reinvent, and find a better way to serve my clients. COVID didn’t stop my business; it forced me to reinvent it.

We’ve been impressed with Business by Barbara, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Business by Barbara

Business by Barbara is more than a tax and consulting business—it is a resource for individuals, families, and entrepreneurs who are trying to build a stronger financial future.

Since 2015, I have built my business around helping people navigate areas that can often feel complicated or intimidating, including tax preparation, business consulting, bookkeeping, credit repair, life insurance, veterans services, and social-service resources.

One of the things that sets Business by Barbara apart is that we are polyglot, serving clients in English, Spanish, Portuguese, and Haitian Creole. Being able to communicate with people in the language they are most comfortable speaking allows me to build trust and make important financial and business information easier to understand.

But what I am most proud of is the relationship I build with the community. I don’t want clients to feel like they are simply another appointment or another tax return. I want them to feel that they have someone who will listen, explain their options, and help them find a path forward.

My business has also grown from my personal experiences as a mother and entrepreneur. I understand that life doesn’t always fit neatly into traditional business hours or environments. That’s why I have worked to create both virtual and in-person ways to serve clients, making my services more accessible to busy parents, families, and entrepreneurs.

Ultimately, I want people to know that Business by Barbara is a place where you can come with a question, a problem, or an idea—and leave with clarity, direction, and someone in your corner.

And if someone reading this has been putting off starting a business, fixing their credit, understanding their taxes, or simply figuring out their next financial step, I want them to know they can reach out. You don’t have to have everything figured out before you ask for help.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
What makes me happiest is knowing that I am helping my family build a better foundation for their future and being able to extend that same support to others in my community.

For me, happiness comes from seeing someone gain hope, understand something that once felt overwhelming, start a business, improve their financial situation, or simply feel that they are not alone.

I’ve also learned that I have to take care of myself and build a strong foundation in my own life before I can truly help others. When I am in a good place—personally, professionally, and spiritually—I am able to give more to the people who need me.

At the heart of it, what makes me happiest is purpose: taking what I have learned from my own experiences, turning it into something positive, and using it to help my family and others move forward.

“I believe you have to build a strong foundation within yourself before you can help someone else build theirs.”
