David, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Hi
I’ve spent my life exploring one simple idea: that music has the power to bring people together, create moments of peace, and inspire us to become the best versions of ourselves.
For more than three decades, I’ve made my home in the Florida Keys, where the rhythm of island life has shaped both my music and my outlook. My original compositions blend Flamenco, Folk, Latin, and world music influences into a style that is uniquely my own—music that is energetic yet peaceful, technically expressive yet emotionally accessible. Rather than simply performing songs, I strive to create an experience that allows listeners to slow down, reconnect, and share a meaningful moment together.
In addition to performing concerts, I teach musician empowerment workshops and clinics, encouraging musicians to move beyond self-doubt, discover their authentic voice, and realize their creative potential.
Giving back has always been an important part of my journey. I serve as President of Islamorada Community Entertainment (ICE), a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to supporting young artists and musicians through scholarships, educational opportunities, and community arts programs.
Over the years, I’ve been fortunate to receive recognition from NPR, PBS, *The Miami Herald*, *Time Out*, and other national media. My album *Black Emerald* spent six weeks at the top of the Broadjam World Music Chart, and my music has been featured on ABC’s *All My Children*, PBS *Art Loft*, NBC’s *Today in South Florida*, National Park Service educational films, and Florida Everglades documentaries.
Today my focus is on performing intimate concerts, appearing at performing arts centers, presenting educational workshops, and composing original music that offers listeners a moment of calm, connection, and inspiration in an increasingly busy world.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
One thing I’ve learned is that the path of an original artist isn’t always an easy one.
Like many musicians, I grew up hearing that there were “gatekeepers” who decided who was talented enough, what style of music was commercially viable, and whether your work deserved to be heard. Music schools, competitions, record labels, promoters, and even well-meaning teachers often unintentionally reinforce the idea that only a select few are gifted enough to succeed.
I don’t believe that’s true.
I believe music is a language. Like any language, it can be learned when we let go of limiting beliefs and allow ourselves to create with curiosity instead of fear. Too many aspiring musicians give up because they’ve convinced themselves they “weren’t born with talent.” I’ve made it part of my mission to help people replace those beliefs with confidence, creativity, and the joy of making music.
There have been practical challenges as well. Original instrumental music doesn’t always fit neatly into the entertainment industry’s expectations. Many venues understandably want familiar songs that audiences already recognize, and artists who create original music often have to work harder to earn opportunities and fair compensation. It’s easy to become “background music” when your goal is to create an experience people truly remember.
Living and performing in a tourist destination has made that contrast especially clear. There is always demand for familiar cover songs that help create an atmosphere, while original music often requires listeners to pause, pay attention, and take a journey with the artist. I’ve always chosen that second path. It may be more difficult, but it’s also more rewarding because it allows me to share something genuine and uniquely my own.
Those experiences eventually changed the way I measured success. Instead of asking, “How do I fit into the industry?” I began asking, “How can I create something that genuinely improves people’s lives?”
That question led me to compose music intended to bring people moments of peace, connection, and reflection. It inspired my musician empowerment workshops, where I encourage others to move beyond self-doubt and discover their own creative voice. It also led me to help build Islamorada Community Entertainment, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting young artists through scholarships, educational opportunities, and community arts programs.
Looking back, I’m grateful for the struggles. They taught me resilience, authenticity, and the importance of creating music that comes from the heart rather than simply following expectations. If my journey has taught me anything, it’s that success isn’t about fitting into someone else’s definition of what an artist should be—it’s about having the courage to become the artist you were meant to be.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I don’t see myself as someone who simply performs music and paints primitive art—I create experiences that help people slow down, reconnect, and remember what’s important.
My compositions blend Flamenco, Folk, Latin, and world music influences, but like my compositions and paintings clearly illustrate, technique has never been my goal. My particular musical style is the dialect of the language I use to communicate something deeper. I want people to leave a concert feeling lighter, more inspired, and more connected than when they arrived.
What also sets me apart is my belief that music/Art isn’t reserved for the gifted—it’s a language available to everyone. Through my concerts and musician empowerment workshops, I encourage people to move beyond limiting beliefs, embrace creativity, and discover that they are capable of far more than they imagined.
I’ve chosen to devote my career to creating original music rather than simply reproducing what’s already been written. That’s not always the easiest path, but it allows me to offer audiences something authentic—music they can’t hear anywhere else.
Ultimately, I hope people don’t remember me because I played a lot of notes. I hope they remember how they felt. If someone leaves one of my concerts with a little more peace, hope, or joy than they had when they walked in, then I’ve accomplished what I set out to do.
What does success mean to you?
Early in my career, I thought success meant bigger audiences, more concerts, and recognition from the music industry. Those things are certainly rewarding, but over time my definition of success changed.
Today, success is knowing that something I’ve created has genuinely made someone’s life a little better.
When someone tells me a piece of music helped them through a difficult time, brought them a moment of peace, inspired them to pick up a guitar again, or simply reminded them of the beauty that’s still in the world, that’s success to me.
Success is also creating opportunities for others. Through my workshops and my work with Islamorada Community Entertainment, I hope to encourage people to believe in their own creativity and help young artists discover what’s possible.
Of course, making a sustainable living from original music matters too. I believe artists deserve to be fairly compensated for the value they bring to the world. But financial success is a means, not the destination. It allows me to continue composing, performing, teaching, and giving back. My good friend Sam Weis, a well known painter says “You have to sell paintings so you can buy more paint:”
In the end, I measure success by impact, not applause. If my music helps people feel more peaceful, more connected, or more inspired—and if that inspiration ripples outward into the lives they touch—then I consider myself successful.
