Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Ferguson.
Hi Alex, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I never imagined that a girl from a small town in Southern Indiana would one day find herself walking runways, appearing in magazines, shooting campaigns and seeing her face on billboards. At 14 years old, I started modeling, and what began as a fun opportunity turned into a career that has now spanned more than 20 years.
I have been a signed model throughout my career, working in markets across the country and having the opportunity to work with incredible brands. Some of my career highlights include working with Lancôme, Reebok, Macy’s, and Kate Spade, as well as appearing in publications such as Allure, Cosmopolitan, and Harper’s Bazaar. Modeling has taken me places I never imagined and introduced me to so many incredible people, but more importantly, it has taught me resilience, confidence, adaptability and the importance of believing in myself.
Like most journeys, mine hasn’t always been glamorous. Behind the scenes, I’ve faced some of the hardest challenges of my life, including overcoming addiction and an eating disorder. Those experiences completely changed my perspective and forced me to redefine what success, confidence, and happiness truly mean. Today, I’m in a season of embracing my health—physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. Prioritizing fitness, nourishing my body, and continuing my healing journey have become a major part of my life. Sharing that journey has been incredibly meaningful because I know there are so many people navigating their own challenges and looking for hope and inspiration.
I have always believed in the importance of growth, education, and understanding people. I earned a degree in Design and Product Development from FIDM, as well as a degree in Behavioral Science and Psychology from Middle Tennessee State University. My education has shaped the way I approach creativity and connection, combining my love for design and aesthetics with my passion for understanding human behavior.
As my career has evolved, so have my passions. Alongside modeling, I am a content creator, sharing my love for beauty, fashion, wellness and the everyday moments that make life meaningful. Content creation has given me a new way to tell stories, connect with others, and share the lessons I’ve learned throughout my journey.
I also founded The Models Coach, where I mentor aspiring and working models as they navigate the industry. After spending more than two decades as a model, I understand how overwhelming it can feel trying to build confidence, create a strong portfolio, how to break into the industry and understand the business side of modeling. Being able to guide other models and share the knowledge I’ve gained has become one of the most rewarding parts of my career.
More recently, I’ve expanded my creativity into photography. Having spent so many years in front of the camera, I have a unique understanding of what helps someone feel confident, move naturally, and create a beautiful image. Photography has become another way for me to support models by helping them understand posing, expression, and how to capture authentic images that showcase their beauty and strengths.
I’ve learned that reinvention is one of the most beautiful parts of life. At 14, I never could have imagined where modeling would take me or how many different paths I would explore along the way. Today, I’m embracing all parts of who I am—a model, creator, mentor, photographer, and someone who continues to grow. I’m excited to keep building, learning, and using my story to encourage others to believe in what’s possible for themselves.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road has definitely not been a smooth one. The modeling industry is incredibly competitive, and from a young age I learned that rejection is something you have to become comfortable with. One of the moments that stayed with me happened when I was 19 years old, when someone who was considered a major figure in the industry told me I was too old to start modeling, that my stomach wasn’t flat enough, and that I would never make it.
Those words were difficult to hear, but they became a defining moment in my career. Throughout my journey, I’ve heard more “no’s” than I could ever count. There were times when I questioned myself, my abilities, and whether I truly belonged. But I learned that in this industry, you have to develop a strong sense of who you are and not allow someone else’s opinion to determine your worth.
Something I always tell the models I work with is that you only need one yes. One opportunity, one person who believes in you, or one door that opens can completely change the direction of your career. My career wasn’t built from constant validation it was built from perseverance, continuing to show up, and believing in myself even when others didn’t.
But the challenges I’ve faced haven’t only been within modeling. Like so many women, I’ve navigated struggles with body image, confidence, relationships, finding my identity, and defining what success truly means. I’ve had seasons where I looked successful from the outside but was struggling internally. Learning to separate my worth from my appearance, my accomplishments, or other people’s expectations has been one of the biggest lessons of my life.
Modeling is an industry that often focuses on what you look like before it considers who you are. Developing thick skin was necessary, but so was learning to love and accept myself beyond the image. Those experiences have shaped the way I mentor today because I know how important it is for models and women in general to feel supported, valued, and confident in who they are.
The challenges I’ve overcome have become some of my greatest strengths. They’ve given me empathy, resilience, and a deeper purpose behind the work I do now.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Today, my work is a combination of modeling, content creation, mentoring, and photography.
One thing that truly sets me apart is that I understand what it means to evolve as a woman. Throughout my career, I have worked at many different sizes, from a size 0 to a size 14, and have experienced firsthand the changes that come with different seasons of life, body image, confidence, and learning to embrace who you are. experienced the changes that come with life, aging, body image, confidence, and learning to embrace who you are in different seasons. Like so many women, I’ve had moments where I had to redefine my relationship with my body and my own self-worth. Those experiences allow me to connect with others on a much deeper level because I know how challenging it can be to feel confident while navigating change.
I’ve also had the opportunity to see the industry from the other side. I spent several years working as a Development Director and scout for a modeling agency, where I helped discover and develop new talent while gaining a deeper understanding of what agencies and clients are looking for. That experience, combined with my own journey as a model, led me to create The Models Coach.
Through The Models Coach, I mentor aspiring and working models by helping them build confidence, understand the industry, improve their movement and posing, prepare for castings, and create a strategy for their careers. But beyond modeling, my goal is to help women believe in themselves. I want women to feel empowered in their own skin, recognize their strengths, and understand that their worth is not defined by their appearance or someone else’s expectations.
I’ve also expanded my creativity into photography, which has become another way for me to support and uplift others. After spending so many years in front of the camera, I understand that a powerful image is about so much more than how someone looks it’s about confidence, movement, expression, and capturing the essence of who someone truly is. I love helping models feel comfortable, seen and beautiful while creating images they are proud of.
What I’m most proud of is being able to take every version of myself, the young girl who dreamed of modeling, the woman who faced challenges, the professional who helped develop talent, and the mentor I am today and use those experiences to help others.
I believe what makes my approach different is that I don’t just teach from theory; I teach from lived experience. I understand the pressures women face around confidence, appearance, success, and constantly feeling like we need to become someone else. My mission is to remind women that they don’t have to wait until they are “perfect” to step into their confidence. They are already worthy, capable, and deserving of being seen.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
I have an incredible amount of support in my life, and I truly believe the people who surround us play such an important role in who we become. My journey would not look the same without the people who have believed in me, encouraged me, and stood by me through every season.
My mom has always been my biggest cheerleader. From the very beginning, she encouraged me to dream big and reminded me that I was capable of more than I could imagine. Looking back, I realize how much that belief shaped the way I approached my career and my life.
My dad has also been a constant source of support. While the fashion world I’ve been a part of for so many years hasn’t always been something he fully understood, he has always supported me, shown up for me, and encouraged me every step of the way. That unconditional support has meant more than words can express.
My Aunt Susie played a special role in my journey by believing in my decision to attend fashion school and pursue a creative career. Having someone encourage me to follow my passion gave me the confidence to take a path that felt true to who I was.
I’m also incredibly grateful for Janet, who has prayed for me and supported me through every chapter of my life. Her faith in me and the love she has shown has been a constant reminder that I’m never walking this journey alone.
Marie P. Anderson has been one of the most influential people in my modeling career. She has been not only a mentor, but a kindred soul. She has advocated for me and so many other models in this industry. She has shared her knowledge, challenged me, and taught me so much of what I know about navigating the modeling world. I truly credit a significant part of my growth and success to her guidance and support.
My best friend Jenna has been by my side through all of the highs and lows. She has celebrated my successes, supported me through my challenges, and been one of my biggest cheerleaders through every season of life. I’m also incredibly grateful for my friend Dave, who has been such an encourager and has continued to remind me of my potential along the way.
When I look back, I know that success is never achieved alone. Every person who has believed in me, supported me, prayed for me, or encouraged me has played a part in my story and you know if you’ve been part of my journey. I’m beyond grateful for each of them, and I hope to continue paying that same support and encouragement forward to others.
