Today we’d like to introduce you to Nic Huey.
Hi Nic, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I moved to Lake Worth in December of 2022 and began hosting mixers out of my apartment in May of 2023, which is where my interconnectedness in the community grew and my passion for gathering people really ignited. In March of 2024 I threw a clown-themed show for my birthday at The Peach called “Last Laugh” that ended up being a hit and I also realized I had knack for putting shows on. That same year I held the first Queer Market at Garden District Taproom which also was meant to be a one-off event that had immediate demand and I had to keep the ball rolling on that as well. I threw Last Laugh at Propaganda in March of 2025 and then in May threw the first Dyke Night show; breaking records in attendance on a random Thursday evening. I have since done my best to continue growing upon these events and continue my outreach in my community by including local orgs and encouraging other organizers to pursue holding their own gatherings as well. I remain being very intentional in planning these events and am beyond grateful for stumbling into my passion and the trust that is put in my hands to uplift the local queer community here.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The struggle was mainly in my personal life, juggling many difficulties that come in your early to mid twenties with a very rapidly growing community and maintaining at least one event a month through some of the hardest times of my life so far. I only recently got a chance to really pause and sit with my achievements so far. Being constantly onto the next thing to plan kept me in a very stressed out state while I found my footing in my role and navigating really monumental life circumstances. I still feel as though I am doggy paddling through life at times. Financial instability and a lack of spaces & venues to work with is very limiting. Being in such proximity to Mar-a-lago is very surreal and the state of the world is both nerve-wracking but also motivating in facilitation connections to strengthen the queer community. I am very political and outspoken including my shows and uphold values in the spaces we create.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I would undoubtedly say events are my creative outlet, both the very intentional planning & curating to making (most) of my flyers. Photography, however, was the first medium that I loved. I had lost my interest in photography after my dear friend & muse passed away unexpectedly in October of 2024. I deeply enjoy shooting my own shows but, I took a long break from creative portraiture. I unexpectedly lost my job at the end of April 2026 and have taken that as an opportunity to invest more time and energy into events and into my own art. I was really reminded of my appreciation for the medium. How important it is to document ourselves, our lives, and our loved ones. I think people appreciate my eye when it comes to shooting shows and I love stripped back portraits of my friends as means to document our life. I aspire to make small batch zines as I feel there has been a big boom in people’s appreciation for physical media & memorabilia. I also hope to curate some art shows this year as well.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
The owners of the businesses I work with have been so flexible and easy going with me. I cannot be more grateful for the chances they took on me and the symbiotic relationship we have developed. The owners of Propaganda: Natalie & Franco and the owners of Garden District : Rosie & Josh.
My right hand through most of my shows has been Lily Vile. She helps hold the stress and weight of show running while also reminding me of my strength and we mutually inspire one another constantly. I truly don’t think I would’ve made it this far without her. My friends Amber & Jacob were involved with my first show and it’s been so cool to watch us all grow individually in our respective talents. Nothing would matter at all of course if it wasn’t for the people who show up and create this community. Getting to witness things grow abundantly has been the best part of what I do. Seeing everyone blossom individually and getting a front row seat to the power of unity has been awesome. The reframing of competition to creative abundance has been a huge factor in everyone’s success.
