Today we’d like to introduce you to Greg “G Sharp” Benjamin.
Hi Greg “G Sharp”, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My journey as a DJ started long before I ever touched a pair of turntables. As a kid, I volunteered to play records at my parents’ house parties, but everything changed after I attended my first school dance. Watching a DJ mix records on two turntables opened my eyes to an entirely new world. I wasn’t just listening to the music anymore—I was fascinated by the craft behind it.
That fascination turned into love the first time I heard legendary DJ Tony Humphries mixing on the radio. His ability to create a musical journey inspired me to learn the art for myself. With no formal training, I taught myself how to beatmatch two records using my father’s home stereo system. It took patience, determination, and countless hours of practice, but from that moment on, I knew DJing wasn’t just something I wanted to do—it was something I loved.
That passion eventually led me to one of the biggest opportunities of my career. In the 1990s, I was blessed to become part of the powerhouse team at WPGC 95.5, where I built my reputation through Washington, D.C.’s #1-rated mix show. My time there opened doors I had only dreamed about, allowing me to perform for massive radio audiences and play some of the country’s biggest clubs, concerts, and special events.
Today, decades later, I’m grateful that I still get to do what I love. Music continues to inspire me, the energy of the crowd still fuels me, and every time I step behind the turntables, decks, or controller, I’m reminded why I fell in love with DJing in the first place. The best part? After all these years, I’m still doing it on my own terms—and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There are always challenges. People trying to take your place, staying innovative and creative, keeping up with the latest trends, building and maintaining the right relationships. Remembering your “why”, and so much more.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Being a DJ has morphed into a lot of things over the years, but for me I see myself as someone that plays other people’s music. Is that creative? Absolutely. Knowing what to play and how to play is an art as much as it is a science.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
That’s like asking a father, “who’s your favorite kid?” lol I have soooooo many, but here’s one.
My siblings and I made to the front of the stage of a Jackson 5 Concert. It was amazing to witness greatness before I was able to understand it.
