Today we’d like to introduce you to Sebastian Firmin.
Hi Sebastian, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
my whole life ive been surrounded by music, my father is a promoter in the Haitian music business. my whole life I’ve loved music, free styling in school a lot. I used to write a lot of music while on the phone with my best friend Caleb (2xcaleb) playing beats out loud for us both to hear, eventually we made a song at his dads house in his little sisters room on some apple headphones. we didn’t drop it at the time because Caleb didn’t like his voice because we sounded like kids, but I showed a girl back then and she sent me a twerking video back with my song in the back, from then I knew we weren’t ass. then late on in high school I met another very very close friend Terrance (newportbox) and we used to be in the car freestyling with other homies while hotboxing. one day I said i knew how to record on garage band, no one really cared at the moment besides him, and later on he hit me up on how to do it, then we were doing the same thing and Caleb were doing in middle school school making songs over the phone, we showed our friends and they were loving it so we posted it, and the feed back we got back from our first was very positive, so from there me and Terrance would always walk to each others house or sneak the car to record a song in my shed, until eventually we got our own equipment and started making music on our own. my first time having the chance to record on a computer with a mic was from a close friend Alyssa (SK) she got me my first mic for my 18th birthday.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
as far as making music its been pretty smooth, the only challenge used to be just finding beats but I’ve learned how to produce my own beats these days, and I record myself at home so its very convenient, I use music as like a diary so the music always flowing, feelings always going. I feel like finding my way to the masses has been kinda hard, I think about it a lot not gonna lie but i know theres a crowd for me, for people that feel like me, I just gotta find a way to get in there faces. I don’t really have a team besides my homies, but other than that from videos, production, studio sessions, everything been in house no actual management.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
im very passionate about what I do, if Im not interested in something, 9.9 out of 10 times I won’t have my heart in it, I direct, I edit, I produced, I engineer, I make out of nothing. I feel like if you ask everyone who really knows me, they’ll tell you im a really pure person, I see potential in everyone and try to feed good energy to people so hopefully it sticks with them, im very persistent and optimistic, no matter how bleak a situations looking, I feel like I have an answer, I got this nothing is impossible/you miss every shot you don’t take type of mindset.i feel like what sets me apart from others is my vulnerability, I say it in the music if I miss a girl, if I cry, what my moms is is telling me, I feel like I give the real spill while making this shit sound fire.
What makes you happy?
pureness, genuine love, making people happy makes me happy, not in like a people pleaser type way, more so saying something that’s funny I know you’ll think about later, holding the door open for an older women and she say my momma raised my right. sometimes it be the little things in you’re life that really leave a mark on someone else’s good or bad, no corny jazz but I try to be the good person in your day if you didn’t have one. even buying people gifts like out the blue, I love catching aa genuine reaction from someone.
