Meet Kay Thompson of The Hair Tease

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kay Thompson.

Hi Kay, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My journey to becoming a Hair Wellness Curator began with a simple observation: over the last few years, I noticed my clients carrying an immense, heavy burden of stress, tension, and burnout. I realized that the traditional, fast-paced ‘blow-dry fix’ culture wasn’t serving the deeper need for rest and restoration that people were truly craving.
I decided to shift my focus entirely toward holistic hair wellness experiences, moving away from superficial services. The Hair Tease is nestled in the coastal enclave of Dania Beach, serving the Greater Fort Lauderdale and Hollywood area as a premier destination for elevated hair wellness. I have carved out a sanctuary space designed to be an ‘antidote’ to the loud, chaotic world outside—a space grounded in clean, organic, and minimalist design where the primary goal is sensory-driven wellness.
Getting to where I am today involved leaving behind standard salon expectations to prioritize the ‘science of the hair’ and the ‘Crown Blueprint™.’ By cultivating this sanctuary within Icon Salon, a community of like-minded entrepreneurs, I’ve been able to turn a simple service into a restorative session that helps my clients reconnect with themselves.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has certainly not been a perfectly smooth road, but every challenge has been essential to refining my vision. One of the biggest struggles was unlearning the ‘salon culture’ that I was trained in. For a long time, there was immense pressure to prioritize speed, quantity, and the standard service model. Making the shift to focus strictly on holistic scalp wellness meant having to educate my clients and sometimes even my industry peers on why a standard service isn’t the same as a scalp-centered session.
Transitioning into a collaborative space was a chance to refine exactly what The Hair Tease stands for. Blending my independent luxury brand into a larger environment took a lot of focus, as I wanted to ensure my specific vision remained untouched. I worked hard to create a space that feels like a true sanctuary—a specialized, curated retreat focused on quality and a very specific aesthetic. This serves as a quiet, peaceful balance to the vibrant energy of the rest of the salon. For me, it was all about carving out a place where my clients can truly disconnect.
Ultimately, the struggle came down to being brave enough to stop offering ‘recipes’ or superficial fixes and instead stand by my own ‘practices’ and ‘sessions.’ Defining my role as a Scalp Wellness Curator rather than a conventional service provider was a pivot that required letting go of what was expected of me so I could fully embrace what I knew my clients truly needed.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
My brand, The Hair Tease, is a sanctuary dedicated to the intersection of scalp health and holistic wellness. While traditional salons often focus on the superficial ‘blow-dry’ culture, I specialize in the ‘science of the scalp’ and our signature ‘Crown Blueprint™.’ I am known for providing restorative, sensory-driven sessions that act as an antidote to the loud, chaotic world outside.
What sets The Hair Tease apart is our commitment to a clean, organic, and minimalist design—a space purposefully curated to provide a grounding experience. We do not offer standard ‘recipes’ or quick fixes; instead, we offer highly intentional sessions and experiences that prioritize long-term scalp wellness and stress relief.
Brand-wise, I am most proud of our pivot away from industry expectations to cultivate an authentic, wellness-focused community within our shared salon space. I want your readers to know that when they book a session with us, they are receiving more than a service—they are investing in a moment of true, quiet restoration. As a community gift to VoyageMIA readers, anyone who mentions this feature when booking their first session will receive a complimentary custom botanical scalp treatment.

Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
If I could share one final thought with your readers, it is that your scalp is the foundation of your wellness, yet it is often the most neglected part of our self-care routines. In a world that constantly demands more of our time and energy, I invite you to see a restorative session as an essential, not a luxury.
I want to thank the community for supporting this transition toward a more intentional, holistic way of caring for ourselves. Whether you are dealing with burnout or simply looking for a quiet, grounding space to reset, I am honored to be a part of your wellness journey. I look forward to welcoming you into our sanctuary and helping you reconnect with yourself, one session at a time.
