Meet Rachelle Batista of Miami / South Florida

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachelle Batista.

Hi Rachelle, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’ve been in love with photography since I first picked up my Nikon Coolpix as a kid. This was before the first iPhone came out! Once phones started advertising that they have cool cameras, and the evolution of technology as we have it today, I was definitely discouraged by peers and family to not pursue this path as they feared I’d become a starving artist and photography would become obsolete. I had to be understanding because they are immigrants from Cuba and wanted the best for me. Fast forward to my 30’s and I have done the 9-5 game for almost 10 years. I picked up my camera and fell in love all over again. It was like I was a kid again loving what I was doing. While I am still a nine to fiver, I am branching out into other creative spaces and meeting new people who are just a as passionate about their crafts. I am still building towards this little community and am really happy to be able to blend the Tampa music scene into what I love to do. I have to give my thanks to Ybor’s crowbar space for allowing local talents to come together and for continuing to inspire me constantly. Thank you.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My dad passed away in 2017 and that was very hard on my family. I felt I had to work harder to help my mom and be her rock. I had to set aside my own dreams to make sure she was okay.
I also became a mother to a wonderful little almost 2 year old! As much as I love it, I definitely struggled with my newfound identity and with postpartum depression.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a photographer! I’ve been in the music scene making some splashes here and there. Concert photography is definitely my jam. (No pun intended) but I also do portraits and event coverage. I will actually be part of the press team at the Tampa convention center here pretty soon. I’m most proud of my local band shots, they are truly passionate individuals and capturing those moments with my lens is truly what I love. What sets me apart, I have an artistic background, so once you’re in front of my camera, you’re my muse, my art. I love capturing a genuine laugh, a focused brow, a meaningful embrace.

How do you define success?
Success for me? If I can get someone that hates being in front of the camera, someone who is never photographed or they feel awkward. I love changing their experience. Love to put folks at ease and feel relaxed. If I can do that, that’s a huge win.
