Today we’d like to introduce you to Carl Cyrius.
Hi Carl, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My journey has been a series of unlikely transitions.
I immigrated to the United States from Haiti as a teenager and later joined the United States Marine Corps. While in the Marines, I graduated at the top of my class in my Military Occupational Specialty training. Because of that performance, I was given the opportunity to choose where I wanted to work, and I selected the Supply Accounting Division (SAD). At the time, I had no idea that decision would shape the course of my professional life.
Working in supply accounting exposed me to financial systems, accountability, and the importance of getting the details right. After leaving the military, I decided to build upon the skills I had already developed. I pursued higher education, eventually earning my MBA in Accounting, believing that if I was going to build a future in business, I needed to invest in myself first.
Like many veterans transitioning into civilian life, I was searching for my next mission. During that period, I participated in a Veteran Entrepreneurship Program where I had the opportunity to present a business concept to a panel of accomplished entrepreneurs, executives, and business owners. To my surprise, I was selected as one of the winners.
That experience became a turning point for me. I remember thinking that if these successful people, many of whom had built and exited businesses of their own, believed in my potential, then maybe it was finally time for me to believe in myself too.
So I took the leap and started The Oasis Firm.
Like most entrepreneurial journeys, the reality was far less glamorous than the vision. There were long days, difficult lessons, and moments where the outcome was anything but certain. But I stayed committed to the mission and to serving people well. One client became two. Two became ten. Ten became hundreds.
Today, nine years later, The Oasis Firm helps individuals, families, and business owners navigate an increasingly complex tax system through tax preparation, tax planning, and tax representation. Along the way, I became an Enrolled Agent, one of the highest credentials awarded by the IRS, allowing me to represent taxpayers before the agency nationwide.
What excites me most today is that the mission has grown beyond serving clients. One of the greatest challenges facing our profession is developing the next generation of tax professionals. Through The Oasis Firm Academy and the Department of Defense SkillBridge Program, we are helping train transitioning service members and future professionals to enter the field. We are not just building a company. We are helping build the workforce that will serve and protect American taxpayers for years to come.
Looking back, it’s amazing to think that a young Marine’s decision to work in an accounting department would eventually lead to a career advocating for taxpayers and mentoring future professionals. What began as a career choice eventually became a mission: protecting taxpayers today while building the professionals who will protect them tomorrow.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely has not been a smooth road.
One of the biggest challenges was realizing that being good at a profession and being good at building a business are two very different things. Early on, I believed that if I worked hard, delivered great service, and took care of people, the rest would take care of itself. Those things are essential, but businesses also require sales, marketing, systems, leadership, and the ability to develop other people. That part of the education came the hard way.
For many years, I was wearing every hat imaginable. Tax preparer, receptionist, marketer, collections department, IT support, and occasionally the janitor. There were seasons where I spent all day serving clients and all night trying to figure out how to keep the business moving forward. It was exhausting, and it was also where I learned the most.
Another challenge has been operating in a profession that most people don’t fully understand. Enrolled Agents are federally licensed tax practitioners with unlimited representation rights before the IRS, but that’s not widely known. Early on, I had to earn trust while simultaneously explaining why I was worth trusting. Over time, I stopped seeing that as a disadvantage and started treating it as an opportunity to educate and advocate, which turned out to be exactly what our clients needed anyway.
There have also been personal challenges. Balancing the demands of being a husband, a father of four, a veteran, and a business owner is not something you ever fully figure out. You just keep adjusting. I remember stretches where the business felt like it was moving in slow motion while everything else in life needed my full attention at the same time. Those seasons tested me. They also showed me what I was actually building toward.
What kept me going was returning to the original purpose. This was never simply about preparing tax returns. It was about helping people navigate one of the most intimidating systems they’ll ever face, and standing next to them when they need someone in their corner.
Ironically, many of the struggles I faced became the foundation for what we’re building now. Knowing firsthand how difficult it is to find and develop qualified talent in this profession is exactly why we launched The Oasis Firm Academy and partnered with the Department of Defense SkillBridge Program. The problem I lived became the problem I decided to help solve.
Looking back, I wouldn’t trade the hard seasons. The obstacles pushed me to grow in ways comfort never would have. And the responsibility of serving others taught me that leadership isn’t about having all the answers. It’s about continuing to show up, learn, and improve.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
At first glance, tax work may not seem particularly creative. Most people picture forms, numbers, and deadlines. I’ve always viewed it differently.
I often describe myself as a translator. The Internal Revenue Code is written in one language, and taxpayers speak another. My job is to bridge that gap and help people understand their options, their obligations, and the opportunities available to them.
As an Enrolled Agent and founder of The Oasis Firm, I specialize in what we call the Holy Tax Trifecta: tax preparation, tax planning, and tax representation. While many professionals focus on one area, I enjoy helping clients through the entire journey, from proactively planning ahead to standing beside them when the IRS comes calling.
What I’m probably best known for is communication. Taxes can be intimidating. IRS notices can create anxiety. Financial decisions can feel overwhelming. I’ve found that many people don’t necessarily need someone to do the math for them. They need someone who can explain complex issues in plain language and help them make informed decisions. That’s where my creative side has always lived.
Over the years, I’ve developed a genuine passion for writing and education. Through newsletters, articles, videos, and community presentations, I try to make taxes more approachable. Whether I’m breaking down IRS changes, drawing on lessons from military service, or reflecting on my Haitian heritage, the goal is always the same: educate first, then empower people to take action.
In many ways, I see tax work as a form of craftsmanship. Anyone can enter numbers into software. The real work is listening carefully, understanding the full story, identifying opportunities, and communicating solutions clearly. That’s where I believe the art lives.
What sets me apart is that I don’t see taxpayers as transactions. Every return tells a story. Every IRS notice belongs to a person. Every business owner is trying to build something meaningful. My role is to help protect that story and move people closer to their goals.
What I’m most proud of is building a career that combines service, education, and advocacy. Through client work, community outreach, and The Oasis Firm Academy, I have the opportunity to help people navigate a system that often feels confusing and out of reach. Many people think I prepare tax returns for a living. The truth is, I spend most of my time translating complexity into clarity, and helping people protect their piece of the American Dream.
What are your plans for the future?
I’m excited about what I believe is the next chapter of our mission.
In the short term, we’re focused on continuing to grow The Oasis Firm while maintaining the personalized service that helped us get here. Growth is important, but not at the expense of relationships. We want every client to feel heard, understood, and cared for.
What excites me most is developing people. The tax profession is facing a real talent shortage as experienced practitioners approach retirement, and I see that as both a challenge and an opportunity. Through The Oasis Firm Academy and our partnership with the Department of Defense SkillBridge Program, we’re working to create pathways into the profession for veterans and future tax professionals, helping build a pipeline of knowledgeable, ethical practitioners who will serve taxpayers long after my own career is over.
On a personal level, I’m also looking forward to stepping more fully into a mentorship role. Early in my career, others invested their time, knowledge, and belief in me. I wouldn’t be where I am today without that. As I move forward, I want to do the same for others.
Ultimately, my vision extends beyond building a successful firm. I want to help strengthen the profession, advocate for taxpayers, and leave behind something that lasts. If we can build systems, develop people, and create opportunities for the next generation, the impact continues long after we’re gone. That’s what I’m looking forward to most: not just growing a company, but growing a community of professionals dedicated to serving and protecting the American taxpayer.
