Inspiring Conversations with Ido Dotan of Precision Painting Plus

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ido Dotan.

Ido, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I spent the early part of my career working in my family’s staffing business before we eventually sold it. After that, I joined four of my closest friends at Precision Painting Plus in New York. Some of us have known each other since we were five years old, others since high school, and now in our 40s, these friendships span more than 30 years. While we’re not related by blood, we’re family. Our wives are friends, our kids are growing up together, and we’ve built a business rooted in the same trust and values that have defined our relationships for decades.

I learned the painting business from the ground up and, in 2020, moved to South Florida to expand Precision Painting Plus into a new market. We quickly realized that the biggest issue in this industry wasn’t painting itself, it was consistency and trust. Clients often didn’t know if contractors would communicate, show up when they said they would, or follow through on their promises.

So we built our business around doing the opposite. We provide our clients with peace of mind through proactive communication, detailed proposals, dedicated project management, clear expectations, and a team that remains accessible from the first phone call through the final walkthrough. We believe exceptional craftsmanship should be matched by an exceptional client experience, because hiring a contractor shouldn’t be stressful.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No, it definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Expanding into South Florida in 2020 meant starting over in many ways. We had an established reputation and proven systems in New York, but we quickly learned that every market has its own challenges.

One of the biggest obstacles was finding the right people and building a team that shared our values around communication, accountability, and customer service. Technical painting skills are important, but finding people who genuinely care about the client experience is much harder.

Another challenge was changing the perception many clients had of contractors. Unfortunately, a lot of homeowners had been let down before. We had to earn trust one project at a time by consistently doing what we said we would do, communicating proactively, and standing behind our work.

Like any business, there have been growing pains, difficult hires, projects that tested us, and lessons learned along the way. But those challenges forced us to improve our systems, strengthen our team, and become better leaders. Looking back, the obstacles are what shaped the business we have today.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Precision Painting Plus South Florida provides residential and commercial painting services throughout Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties. We specialize in interior and exterior painting, luxury homes, designer-driven finishes, wallpaper installation and removal, Venetian plaster and decorative finishes, condominium communities, and large commercial projects.

What I’m most proud of is that we’ve built a company people genuinely trust. A lot of our business comes from referrals and repeat clients. People invite us back into their homes, refer us to their friends, and trust us with larger projects because they know we’ll do what we say we’re going to do. In this industry, that’s something you earn one project at a time.

What makes you happy?
For me, happiness comes from creating stability. A stable business means our clients have someone they can trust, our team has opportunities to grow, and the people who work with us can support their families. Knowing that we’ve built something that benefits so many people is incredibly rewarding.
