Today we’d like to introduce you to Mike Heath.
Hi Mike, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’ve been boxing since 1997. Im infatuated with the art. From boxing to mma it is truly a passion. I made my name with Winky Wright and Jeff Lacy. Sparring and working in camp since a teen. I started full time coaching at 21 years old. Mostly assisting and 2nd corner but always coaching. I became head coach and head striking coach in my early 30s. I was in group homes and foster care all my life. Boxing is truly all we had and even at only 20 some dollars a month we still couldn’t afford it. From shoveling snow to any hustle we could find tonpay and stay in the gym we did.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Childhood was rough but such is life. I stayed focused and kept pushing. I’ve always loved this! Helping ppl and coaching. My mom went to prison in 1989 and I never met my dad. However so many ppl had it worse and still do. So ima keep coaching and trying to help.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Im a head coach and striking specialist. I have a few UFC fighters and pro boxers under my tutelage and some bareknuckle fighters also. Im mostly known for helping ppl become better quickly and creating world champions and championship material. Im most proud of mybown kids and their greatness but im truly proud to be a part of something so phenomenal and 1 of a kind as the GoatShed. Bar none the best gym and coaches I’ve been with. I honestly believe (and believe my fighters would tell you) that I offer a REAL feel of fighting EVERY session without the risk of injury. I genuinely care about my fighters so I do everything from film study and fight simulation with them.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
I like some old Vince Flynn books and all the GOT books. “How to talk to girls at parties” by Teddy Tarantino is a MUST read. I like comedy and music so not many podcasts. Im a real hands on ppl person.
