Today we’d like to introduce you to Jovanique Roldan.
Hi Jovanique, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My story started in October of ’88 in Chicago, IL, during the era of the Chicago Bulls dynasty! By the time I was 6 years old, I was on my way to becoming Jovanique in the County of Dade… 305 to be exact. Artistry was always a part of my creative journey, but during my young adulthood, being a beauty professional wasn’t really seen as a sought-after career unless you were working with celebrities. So I took the traditional route and began my journey as a college student studying multimedia design, only to slowly realize that what I was good at, I wasn’t happy doing. As synchronicity would have it, I had the opportunity to switch to beauty school and complete my cosmetology license. Ten months later, I was officially a licensed professional. I immediately began freelancing and building the clientele I’m blessed to have today. A lot of peaks and valleys, but I’m blessed to say I’ve done what I’ve wanted in my career: film, photography, TV, entertainment, travel, bridal, special events, volunteering, and now integrating wellness. The experience in this industry has taught me that a beauty professional’s core skill isn’t only artistry, but also the ability to understand human behavior and human nature through body language. My artistry, along with my ability to hold space for my clients, is what I give full credit to for the longevity of my career, now going on 14 years. The human interaction is honestly what continues to inspire me to do more for others, which is what led me into wellness and currently studying psychology. My goal is to continue expanding beauty beyond appearance and into overall well-being, creating experiences that make people feel seen, understood, cared for, and connected to themselves again.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There have definitely been more bumps than smooth roads, but MY road trip wouldn’t be worth the ride without the detours, and I wouldn’t be who I am today because of them.
Those detours came with life being life. Within my artistry, there were moments where I felt I wasn’t good enough, felt defeated, almost gave up, and lacked the compassion for myself that I so freely gave to others. But every single time I reached that point, I also realized I was becoming better at my craft. Discomfort eventually became confidence. Some of my most stressful environments brought out the truest artist in me. I learned to adapt, to trust myself, and most importantly, to keep going. With time, experience, and resilience, I became not only a better artist, but a stronger person.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
What makes my work unique as a beauty professional is that I don’t view beauty as only an external transformation. Through years behind the chair, I’ve learned that beauty professionals often become part artist, part therapist, part energy reader. My work is rooted in creating an experience where clients feel comfortable, confident, and genuinely seen. Whether I’m creating a look for a production set, a bride, or a wellness-based head spa experience, my goal is always the same… to combine artistry with intention. I’m always inspired by human behavior, psychology, and the emotional connection people have with beauty and self image. As my career continues to evolve, I’m expanding my work into wellness and psychology, exploring how beauty rituals, touch, environment, and self-care impact emotional well-being and confidence. My work is ultimately about transformation, not just how someone looks, but how they feel when they leave my chair.
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I secretly enjoy creative writing, and my way with words feels a lot like lyrics to a song. I’ve always been naturally good at writing, but over the years it became something much more personal and intentional for me. That eventually led me to creating my Substack, where I discuss all things mind, body, and spirit, inspired by my experiences with life, human connection, and years spent behind the chair.
People may also be surprised to learn how involved I am in community work. I’ve always volunteered throughout my career, and one of my proudest achievements has been leading a team of volunteer beauty professionals for the Nicklaus Children’s Hospital prom. Creating that experience for the teens is something I genuinely look forward to every year.
