Today we’d like to introduce you to Casey Cargill.
Hi Casey , so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
As I grew up I realized I had always been artistically gifted. I had a passion for dance, then I got into creative writing, after that I dabbled in sketching, then I started painting and even sold almost everything I created and after that I went to school for animation in Canada. I decided it wasn’t for me though and came back home to then realize I wanted to do makeup full time. I started doing makeup at the very beginning of COVID. I made a few tutorial videos just for fun and started to get following from it so I continued. I started with regular glam makeup and about a year in I got into special effects makeup (my real passion) don’t get me wrong I enjoy all types of makeup but I love special effects and editorial makeup the most. I’ve never been taught how to do the artistic things I’ve done in my life. From painting to writing to sketching to makeup it’s all just been whatever talent’s running through my veins. Art has always been my escape, I’ve struggled in life with a lot of things most people don’t know about. I’m happy I have an outlet to express myself and my feelings about everything I have and am still carrying in life.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Honestly it hasn’t been a smooth road at all, I didn’t leave college just because I decided I wanted to do something different but also because I was struggling with my bipolar and borderline personality disorder. Though it’s hard to deal with it most days i think I wouldn’t be the artist I am today if I didn’t have a story to tell, if I didn’t struggle at some point in my life. Now does that mean I like struggling, NO, however I do pour all of myself into my work and I think it speaks volumes.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a full time Makeup Artists that specializes in Special Effects Makeup but that’s not all I do. I also dabble in costume making, cosplay wig making and costume accessory making. I don’t do much painting anymore but if I am commissioned I would do more pieces. What I am most proud of is probably my work as an MUA I honestly don’t think you can find anyone else on this island that are able to go to the lengths that I go to when it comes to creating a look. I work with prosthetics and contacts and bald caps and all kinds of other sfx stuff. I don’t think I have ever said I can’t do a look. That’s not me bragging by the way I’m just trying to get the point across. I think I can do even more than I have done in terms of dramatic-ness in my looks but people in the Bahamas have very small minds and keep themselves in a box creatively so I’m rarely booked for the special effects looks I would like to be booked for.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
Well the only reason I started taking up art was because of the art teacher at my old school in grade 9 and she basically threw me into the deep end and just said draw! She was there to assist me but she encouraged me to do something I was scared to do cause I didn’t think I would be good at it. I honestly think if it wasn’t for her I may not have figured out how much I love art! I would also like to give my parents credit. Kenyon and Vardlee Cargill bought me art supplies for Christmas that same year and I started painting away. They supported my artistic journey then on. They have always made me feel like I could succeed doing what I love instead of settling for less.
