Today we’d like to introduce you to Naty Hernandez.
Hi Naty, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m a Colombian singer-songwriter, poet, guitarist, bassists and visual artist currently based in Miami. I started writing songs and poems very young, growing up between the emotional intensity of Medellín and a deep love for storytelling, books and music. Before I fully understood the music industry, I already knew I wanted to create art that made people feel less alone.
Over the years, I studied songwriting and bass studies at Berklee College of Music and jazz guitar at Universidad EAFIT, while slowly building a career both as an artist and behind the scenes in the music industry. I’ve had the opportunity to write for and collaborate with incredible artists, such as Joaquina, Ela Taubert, Julio Reyes Copello, Catalina García and in 2023 I was nominated for a Latin GRAMMY as a songwriter for “Bailo Pa Ti” by Monsieur Periné.
At the same time, I was developing my own artistic universe. My current project, ROMANA, brings together poetry, music, film and visual art into one emotional world centered around intimacy, desire, vulnerability and human connection in times where masculine voice has a very strong present in the current music market. What makes the project special to me is that many of the songs were born from erotic poems first. Before there was music, there were words.
This year I released my first poetry book at FILBo (Feria Internacional del Libro Bogotá) and began rolling out the accompanying album and short film. It’s been a very independent journey — balancing creativity, business, production and storytelling all at once — but I think that process has shaped me deeply as an artist and producer. Right now, my goal is to continue building a space where people, can known they can express their feelings in a very emotional and brave way, using perhaps the words of my poetry and songs.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road, but honestly, a lot of the challenges helped me understand myself more clearly and shaped my artist persona. In 2023, I made an album myself during a two month intense period where I would stay up late writing, recording and figuring things out as I went — sometimes even searching online how to finish certain parts of the music production because I was learning in real time. Looking back, it makes me feel proud, it reminded me that curiosity and passion can take you very far.
That process also helped me realize something important: music and poetry are a huge part of who I am and that no matter what else is happening in life, I need to make space for creating. Even while working or navigating adulthood, I’ve learned how important it is to protect time and energy for the artistic side of myself.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My work lives somewhere between music, literature and visual storytelling. I write songs, poetry, play guitar and bass, and develop artistic worlds that connect emotion, intimacy and storytelling in a very personal way. On another side I worked for a music publishing company where I merge my artist perspective to support, guided and admin songs made by well stability writers and composers in the Latin music industry.
Lately, I’ve been focused on my project ROMANA, which combines a poetry book, a music album and a short film into one universe. A big part of my creative process starts with words and emotions before production. Sometimes a poem becomes a song, and sometimes a song becomes a visual scene or story. I think that blend of poetry and music bring again attention to the lyrics in music where people take less risk to use unique words because they are writing songs to fit on a specific trend.
I’ve had the opportunity to collaborate and write within the music industry, including being part of a Latin GRAMMY nominated song, but what means the most to me is creating work that feels honest and human.
I care a lot about creating experiences, not just songs — spaces where people can feel vulnerable, inspired and understood. There’s also a feminine perspective in my work that is very important to me: talking about desire, sensitivity and emotional complexity in a poetic, intimate and unapologetic way.
What are your plans for the future?
Right now, I’m very focused on continuing to build the world around ROMANA. I recently released my poetry book and I’m now expanding the project through music, visuals, live performances and film. I’m excited about creating more intimate experiences where people can connect not only with the songs, but with the emotional universe behind them.
I’m also looking forward to growing my community internationally, especially between Latin America, Spain and the U.S. I would love to bring the project to bookstores, cultural spaces, theaters and festivals in a way that feels immersive and human. I’m very inspired by the idea of creating spaces that feel like a refuge through art.
At the same time, I want to continue evolving as a songwriter and collaborator while developing my own artistic identity more deeply. I feel like I’m entering a chapter where I’m trusting my vision more fully and allowing myself to dream bigger creatively. More than anything, I’m excited to keep creating work that connects emotionally with people and reminds them they’re not alone.
